Need a new air filter. Mine is standard foam one which last time I replaced it I seem to remember it cost a small fortune for what is effectively just a piece of shaped foam. Is there a better system out there which maybe gives better engine breathing, or a pattern filter that doesn't cost a fortune?
Are they the same as the 748 / 916 if so try Pipercross. Pipercross MPX 038 Ducati 916/748 1994 Foam panel Air Filter Plenty on e-bay. Steve
Totally different to mine. Mine looks like a big pancake shape that covers the whole of the airbox. Do you know are these instead of, or as well as?
The foam cap is not the original filter fitted to the R. Like the whole family, the OE were foam panels that fitted in the air ducts. There have been horror stories in the past of the type you have fitted with with the framework collapsing and the foam blocking the intake. Over a long time the foam degrades and bits can end up in the intake as well. If you do not have the original air tubes, I fitted BMC but there are other styles. Andy
Hi Steve, the filter mentioned sits over the shower injectors like a hair net and is held off by a simple framework. Andy
Yes it covers the whole of the airbox including the inlet trumpets. "Like a hair net" is a good description. Seems like there are different systems then? Which to get?
Your's is aftermarket then, if you put the standard one's that fit in the air tubes back in you will need the plastic frames that hold them. Steve
It's a matter of choice and budget. There are alternatives to the stock air filter and there are complete replacements like the BMC. If you are not going to play with the engine, then stick with the stock style especially if you have the original air tubes. If you are going to remap either with a replacement eprom or a power commander, then you need to look at a freer flowing replacement. I would not use the style of filter you currently have for the reasons already stated. Andy
I have carbon air tubes but as far as I can see they are pretty much the same design as the originals
Many carbon tubes don't allow the fitment of standard filters, luckily mine do, that may be the reason you have aftermarket filters. Steve
bmc filters are the best after market ones but they fit in the mouth of the air box, but to be honest the original filters are best ones but as mentioned you cant fit them in carbon air tubes. The air filters that fit over the bell mouths i dont think are very good!! an air box need air around it not full of foam!! think louigi moto did a test on a 748 on the dyno and it lost 5 bhp with one of those big foam filters fitted.
So when you say fit in the mouth of the airbox do you mean where the two airtubes enter the airbox? Does that mean they will fit with my carbon airtubes? Also airbox is carbon, does that make any difference?
Do you mean these? £200.00 for 2 air filters? **** me! There must be a better way. Dont mind spending money on my baby but that is a little steep!
It might be worth you looking inside your air tubes, if they are perfectly smooth they won't take standard filters, if they have a small shelf at two places inside they should take standard filters. Steve
get rid of carbon air tubes and put piper cross air filters back in standard tubes, there the best you can do. if not get ya money out and get some bmc you tight ass!! :tearsofjoy:
