Hells Teeth, I Want To Buy A 749 Or 999. Advice Please!

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by MikeB58, Apr 12, 2017.

  1. Hi everyone, just joined as I am in the market for a 999 or 749. Head says 749S, post 2005, heart says any bright shiney one. preferably 999S. Not many about, test rides seem to be a bit precious. I recently rode a 996, which was all I expected it to be , but a bit shabby and I kinda hanker for the ugly duckling (749/999, swan in my eyes). Any advice or news on what's on the private market would be gratefully received. One of two is going to have to go (modern sensible,VFR800 old, sensible, 81 BMW R100). I want less sensible ! Anyone want to consider P/X for the BM? (lots of miles, but pretty sweet). TA!

  2. Personally I'd go for a 999, Dave. And of course, welcome :)

  3. Thanks for the Welcome, I'm thinking 999 as well, but prices are getting a tad scary. no rush, so we will see.

  4. At least you will not have any depreciation ;) when you spot the one you will know - what's the budget?

  5. What do you mean by budget? Head budget? (next to nothing). Heart budget (basically anything red and shiny!). I'm probably thinking vicinity of 4- 5k.

  6. Later 999S with red frame, more go, Ohlins and radial brakes is probably the one to go for but will bust your budget.
Guaranteed return on your investment though :)

  7. Get the early one with the cutouts in the front fairing as they look better.

  9. Hello & welcome Mike

  10. Thanks. My thinking as well really ... but know I will need to dig deeper into the pockets. I'm going to have a look at a couple of 749s in Newcastle this weekend (I happen to be up there even though i'm a southerner) Advice here seems to be go for the 999.

  11. Yep noted and thanks. I like the post 2005 better myself, but hey each to his own. Wondering whether I can do yellow or black as well. The S looks good in any colour. Have to start thinking about making room in the garage!

  13. 749 and 999 are both great bikes in their own way.
Facelift models have a few improvements and both 749 & 999 have more bhp than earlier years. You should try and have a go on both sizes to see which you prefer. I got a 05 999 base because I am 2up a lot otherwise I mightve bought a 749S. Ohlins forks look and work great but the seals seem to be unreliable, which always puts me off S models.

  14. Ducati started measuring BHP from the crank in 2004 and previously stated rear wheel horsepower - so pay little attention to the booked 'power gains' between earlier and later models :Finger:

  15. Not sure they did yellow post 05. Might be wrong on that.

  16. Red and gloss black only for facelift. Also be aware there were some early models the factory fitted with facelift bodywork and black arm to clear old stock.

  17. Hi & welcome.

I've had both, 749s/749r & 999r. The choice can be down to how you like to ride. 999 loads of power and torque, more than you need on the road, makes for a lazy ride as it will pull out of most corners in any gear. 749 needs more work, changing up and down gears a little more, revving it a little harder. For me, the little extra work to ride a 749 quick, is more fun than the lazy ride on the 999.

749 has more than enough power for the road, but, not that much to catch you out. You can crack the throttle wide open on a 749 just about any where, and it will just dig in and go. On a 999 you have to watch the power a little more, so as not to get out of shape.

Both are excellent bikes, try to get an S version of which ever you buy.

  18. i've been looking, but life, work etc has got in the way. A couple of good looking 749s been and gone, but hoping to check out a 999s next week or so. Lets hope I find a good un. Garage room remains a conundrum!
