1098s Camshafts 7m3 Or 7m4

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by timtay, May 3, 2017.

  1. I recently brought a 2007 1098s with 10,400 miles on the clock, while riding the bike home the vertical RH inlet valve head snapped off & wrecked the engine. The vertical head, barrel & piston are trashed & possibly the crank? The horizontal cylinder is fine.
I've managed source a complete vertical head (done 5k mikes) the camshafts are marked 7M3, but the camshafts from my old head are marked 7M4 (I assume the horizontal cams are marked the same). Could I mix these cams? i.e. 7M3 on the vertical head & 7M4 on the horizontal head?
    Thanks in advance.

  6. BikeBoy.org - Ducati Cam Specs

The 1098 was originally supplied with 7M3 cams, which we replaced with 7M4 cams due to the timing tool slots being machined incorrectly. They are otherwise the same, and the 7M3 are fine if you check and set the timing with a degree wheel, etc.

  7. FYI, before you think I'm clever, I'm not, I don't understand a word of that, I'm just pretty hot with Google.

  8. Thanks for the link, it looks complicated, but from what I can see, the cams are basically the same so I guess I can mix them...?
    Cheers

  9. Christ, don't ask me! According to the link it looks likely though.

  10. That is dogsh*t luck mate I feel for you. I'll ask a guy who'll know about the cams in the morning and get back to you.

Ps. Cool looking SS in your avatar too

Forgot to say - the vertical and horizontal cams are marked differently to reflect the head they belong to and whether inlet or exhaust

  11. The 7M4 was introduced to remedy the 1098 stalling issue, the timing slot for the ducati timing tool is machined slightly different, thats all.
So yes, you can use the 3M cams.
