Termignoni End Cans Spitting Oil?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by TheAlfa1, May 9, 2017.

  1. Good morning guys and girls

So my 848 evo has started spitting what I think to be oil from the exhaust.

Bit of information, not long had the 15000 mile service, when it came back it ran fine.

Since then I have put some termignoni slip ons on, along with the ecu.

After a few miles I noticed a black oily residue around the tip of the cans.
    60mile on it's still there.

    Any advice?

  2. Maybe moisture? Have you taken the bike for a good run? Or just a short trip

  3. As said, it's probably dirty, sooty water/condensation. Best way to tell is to rub it with your finger and see if it feels oily or not. Termi's are, no doubt different internally to stock cans so you'll potentially get a bit of moisture egress

  4. Sounds like the ECU is not matched to the cans well enough/running richer than with original set-up.

  5. I thought there was a map purely for the termi's?

  6. The ECU he's fit should be the one that comes with the termis and includes the map.

  7. Yeah so it shouldn't be running rich then?

  8. exactly. Unless it's a second hand unit and the previous owner had some custom mapping done to that ECU (can't even tell you if that ECU is hackable though).

  9. No it's a new unit.

  10. Is the oil level in the engine going down any faster than it did before ?

  11. Both my 748 and 999 emit visible clouds of water vapour (like all vehicles) whilst warming up which is hardly surprising as the engine takes in something like a gallon of water in the air that it breaths to burn a gallon of fuel. That water content increases with humidity and on cool days is very evident due to the vapour condensing. My bikes warm up with the exhaust outlet approx. 2-3 feet away from the garage door and have covered it with a black rash of dry, slightly waxy black splatter. It is carbon from the exhaust box mixing with the water from combustion that has condensed on the inside of cold exhaust pipes, (they are stainless on the 999 and Titanium on the 748). I get drips from the left hand silencer front by the pillion footrests when it is a very humid day.

    Nothing to worry about

  12. If it was oil, it would surely burn off once the exhaust became hot, producing an ammount of blue smoke.

  13. If it were oil. It would smoke like a bastard. The only way you can get oil to pass into the exhaust system is either very worn valve guild / stem seals. Or passed the piston ring into the combustion chamber.
As already said it will be moisture mixed with carbon deposits.

    Or brake fluid......:tearsofjoy:

  14. If you take a look at the OEM cans, most Jap OEM zorst systems, and some aftermarket cans you will find there is a small hole (2mm - 3mm diameter) drilled into the can at its lowest end. I did the same with my Laser exhausts when I changed the ally sleeve (which had the hole) to carbon ones. I assume the holes are to let condensation drain out.

  15. Thanks for all your feedback.
Took her out for a good ride yesterday and it's cleared up
