Belt Marking..is It Necessary?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Troutman, Oct 3, 2016.

  1. Ok so the belts are on and I did mark them but as I thought there really was no need...as long as all the timing marks are lined up when you fit the belt on to each pulley it cannot be wrong. It would be impossible for someone to stretch that belt onto the wrong tooth..no way...it will only fit into the correct slot in the pulley when it is lined up with it's timing mark. However I recommend anyone doing this to mark and count or rather than count just lay them on top of each other so the teeth line up and copy the mark over to the new belt. Or don't bother.

  2. It doesn't matter where the belts are marked, though; just as long as you make marks on the pulleys to coincide........Although it probably isn't necessary, I did it because I felt my OEM pulley marks weren't quite spot on to a tooth position.........and then I counted and transferred the same marks to the new belts.

  3. Hi there, i wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of a basic hz download programme for the tensioning on the cam belts, got the tools, belts and micraphone and ready to do it, but the programmes i have found tend to be for music minded people.
Needless to say i am not, thanks in advance.

  6. I've never marked my belts,by the way my son has recently had a belt break ,be interesting to see what damage has occurred (600 monster).

  7. I can't think of a single reason to actually mark the belts ?? If the wheels are in the correct position, what does it matter where the belts are, so long as they have the correct amount of teeth and are tensioned correctly.

  8. Cheers Exige thanks for the pointers, much appreciated.

  9. Way i see it if people need to ask about marking belts it tells me they aren't confident in doing the job? however thats not to say they shouldn't have ago, or just get someone who is confident to do it. first time i did my 996 took 2hrs from removing fairing to replacing fairing, its not rocket science its just all the bulshit hype surrounding Ducati's in general!! like they are somthing mystical, like fuck they are.
A pal of mine has never changed the belts on his 900ss and he's owned it 12yrs, he changed them 3mths ago, we used the old belts as slings to lif the 454 big block motor out of his 71 corvette!! so much for them snapping through old age, anyone remember the old 1970's victor with slant engine? 90,000mls cam belt change, im sure we have moved on since those times.

  10. The thing I would be nervous about marking belts with is, that if a paint pen or marker with unknown chemicals in it is used, who's to say this won't degrade the belt strength ??

  11. Who knows but adding 1 more step to a simple job seems to me pointless, the timing marks are there to time it up!! so use the fukin things.
