Ducati 848 Cranking But Not Starting

  1. Thanks for the replies and suggestions. It seems like @Maccaa was the one who hit the nail on the head. After checking the service book, the last time fuel filter was changed was in 2015 - 6000 miles ago. I ordered a new one and changed it today and it started straight away! Thanks Maccaa!

On a side note, there seems to be some black-ish smoke:

Anything to be worried about or ?

    Cheers

  2. Really good news about the filter solution. It's impossible to say with certainty but it's probably fine – have you been using in town more frequently than open Road/Left idling for long periods?

  3. Haven't really ridden it in about a month.

  4. Black smoke like that is usually fuel, probably the bike was still a bit cold, it should clear when warmed up if it continues, then check air filters, white smoke water related, blue smoke normally oil related.

  5. Cheers for the info on the smoke. It seems however the bigger issue is back! :(

The bike started straight away after new fuel filter and then a few more times, I then left it on for a bit and after a couple of minutes it cut out. It started again a few more times and remained on but got progressively worse (with the cutting out) and now doesn't start up again.

I'm thinking bad fuel atm, or something to flush fuel system/carbs ?

  6. Water?

  7. You can buy some injector cleaner that you can put thru the tank and clean the system. Have you used new fuel with the new filter? Also, if you have had the tank off, check the fuel lines as there is one that easily gets twisted, so it lets fuel thru but not enough.

  8. Hello fellow Ducatisti.
New to the forum and to a 2nd hand 848 2010 model. Bit late to the party but just adding my experience.
I had exactly the same issue with my bike cranking and not starting, but before that, it was cutting out when dropping from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to neutral.
I checked the tank for a disconnected fuel pump, charged the battery so was showing a minimum of 12.8amps when turning the key, changed the spark plugs for irridium plugs, bought a fuel filter in anticipation of having to change the fuel pump, then by chance, thought I'd try disconnecting the Power Commander the previous owner fitted as it was running really rich.
Turns out he (or someone) had cut through the wiring loom of the PC, probably to have the option of disconnecting it and used crimp connectors as the choice for reattachment. It was poorly done with five out of the eight connections being loose. Sceptically, I ordered a pair of 4 connector super seal connectors from Halfords, redid the wiring with proper crimp pliers and boom! Fired up first time. And again. And again.
So just to add that sometimes the issue might be poor electeical connectoons.
    Hopefully this helps someone else.
