My Nemesis

  1. Hello You Lot,

I'm having a few issues with a 1098R I bought a few months ago, and having chatted with resident ECU genius @chrisw he's suggested I start a little thread.

    So, here goes.

The bike is a JHP track special and has very high compression. This is my third one of this sort of thing and whilst they can be a pig to start, once they're up and running they usually are pretty good for the rest of the day. However, despite already doing the reg/ rec, relays and putting a MUCH bigger battery in the battery box and running a 900 CCA slave battery to it via an Anderson plug fly lead, the bastard thing is still really hit and miss, and Chris thinks it might be the TPS or equivalent so I'd like to get it plugged in and have a look and see what's happening.

    However.

Having spoken to JHP they tell me that the fly lead to interrogate the ECU should be at the ECU, but the only terminal I can find that matches the non USB end of the Nemesis cable is away from the Ecu, and ultimately leading to the sensor under the seat which tells the ECU what lean angle the bike is carrying and therefore presumably activates the TC. Chris thinks this might be where you're supposed to plug in and is an extension to save pulling the panels every time, but when it's connected to my laptop and the Nemesis software (from the disk that came with the cable/ bike) is open I cannot get it to do anything, regardless of whether the bike is running or just powered up. It's not seeing the bike or doing anything.

The only cables actually 'spare' from the ECU itself are one standard 3 pin Ducati socket which fits into Chris's diagnostic kit but won't let us talk to the ECU via it (you'll see there's actually two in the pics below, but one of them is for the QS) and one grey and orange plug that comes out of the Ecu too but does not match the Nemesis lead.

So, can anyone tell me how to talk to the Nemesis Ecu please? Am I doing something wrong? JHP aren't really that interested in helping that much, which is fair enough as they're running a business so I'm really hopeful someone here can suggest some way for us (i.e. Chris, while I make lame jokes) to have a look around and see if anything is amiss.

    Anyone?

Sorry for the dullness. Here's some equally dull pics. Thanks for any thoughts you might have. The person who helps gets Haribo thrown at their face until they're sick. You're welcome.

    N.

  2. Why not just rip out the Nemesis and let Chris remap the ecu directly? Mr R was rebuilt with HC Pistals @14:1/polished'n'ported/Corse cams etc, and it fires up perfectly (Shorai lithium + Exact starter cables) and is very tractable at road speeds. Chris remapped the ECU directly. No complaints.

  3. I don't think it needs totally redoing fella, just interrogating.

Plus, I think Chris can't talk to it via his kit (we tried using his excellent loan kit today but they won't talk to each other) which is why he asked me to pop a thread on here for you lot to throw your massive brains at.

  4. My 1098R was a track day bike with it's previous owner and looked after by JHP. He had an issue with it not starting one day and put it into them to be resolved. Talking to him when i bought it, they threw everything at the bike in an attempt to get it to start. They said that they eventually traced it down to the wiring loom, which was replaced but when the owner went to pick the bike up, it wouldn't start. In their embarassment they changed the dash and ECU and the bike fired. I think he only used it a couple of times after that.

Anyhoo, I buy it and the 1st time I go to use it, it won't start. No matter what I did, it would not fire. I called JHP as they knew the bike, who were worse than useless and very uninterested. The guy was very condecending on the phone to the point where you would think I had never seen a motorbike before. Now I know I didn't buy it from them, but there were receipts for over £20k spent with them on it for mods and servicing and it had been into them very recently.

As a last resort, I put it into my local dealer, who get it to fire occasionally, but it's tempermental and floods. Once it floods, you can forget about trying to start it for 3 days. Plugs, Injectors, Cam timing, Dash, ECU, coil packs......noting sorts it. By this time I had to replace the sprag as all the attempts to start it by the dealer had put paid to that.

I'm about to break the bike for spares as I can't see where I'm going to go with it. Something the mechanic in my dealership said made me think. He said he had seen this before on Multistradas and traced it to the starter motor drawing more current when they start to age. The bike is cranking over but there is not enough power left in the battery to generate a spark, so the bike floods just like mine was, also that the 1098R had a 14A battery instead of a 12A. So before I buy a starter for it, I decide to go for an 18A lithium battery (tin hat on) and a set of @Exige 's starter leads................The bike has never failed to fire since. It can take a little cranking when cold, but always fires up. It hates to idle when cold and I have to hold it on the throttle for the 1st minute or so, but then it's fine. I've put this down to the reduced mass flywheel, but I've never delved deeply into it.

BTW, it has Nemesis TC, but a standard ECU running a custom map. Because of this, I always have the engine management illuminated and get coil errors as described in the Nemesis operating manual. The only way to get rid of this is to run a Nemesis ECU apparently.

  5. Only trying to suggest simplifying your setup to get the same end result... but part of the issue is that Chris does not seem as available as he once was, to do a live remap on a dyno. Chris is/was very good at doing a direct map and he has the knowledge to sort the issues, so I'm not sure why there are 'loan kits' being mentioned...

  6. Thank you Rob. I really appreciate you taking the time to write that.

This is exactly it, from top to bottom, including the nature of the bike and my experience with JHP. Once it's started it's awesome, but restarting it every time- even if it's been running moments before- is as if starting it for the first time. Adding a bigger battery plus the fly lead seems to have helped but it's still a bit stressy and unsure, to the extent that I'm having to start it 10 mins before my group is called just to ensure that I get it started in time without being massively stressed out.

I've already hollowed out the battery box and put in a bigger battery but perhaps as you say I should go for a lith one and do the starter leads too. And maybe a starter motor too if they're not huge money, which of course it will be.

    Which battery did you buy?

  7. The error code I constantly have is the (I think) 13.3 inj one. It's the same one you get when the bike won't start after a lot of attempts anyway. It doesn't clear so I'm guessing it's as a result of the Nemesis ECU.

  8. I understand what you mean buddy. Apologies if I seemed terse, I didn't mean to.

Chris has a loan kit that he's sent me before (and now again) that allows to talk to the ECU. I can't speak for his availability, but he's been incredibly gracious with his time as always, and will never accept anything for his trouble asking only for a little donation to a charity. He's a top chap.

  9. That sounds like maybe you have another issue. The nemesis manual specifically mentions that it's normal to have the engine management light illumintaed and to get coil errors as the TC system breaks into the coil circuit.

My bike has no other errors.

  11. The numerical code might not be right, but the 'inj' part definitely is, as I remember it being the same one from the last one of these seemingly cursed 1098s I had. That bike used to throw that code after you'd tried to start it unsuccessfully too many times. Can't remember if it ever cleared.

I've certainly got an engine management light on too as a result of the Nemesis presumably, but it's ok as I have a JHP piece of tape over it. Shudder to think what that tape cost.

  12. 200 pounds?! Wow. My wife cost less than that.

Though, in fairness, she also weighs more than 200 pounds.

  13. Yep, the desulphating cycle on Optimates isn't liked by LiPo batteries. As long as your charger doesn't have this, you may be OK.

I bought one of these to be on the safe side, given the cost of the battery at the time.

  14. It was £130 when I bought it 2 years ago. This was the 1st page I looked at today, do a search.

  15. Thanks Rob. Luckily, I wasn't planning on eating this month anyway :)

  16. You can charge a shorai with a conventional trickle charger, but NOT optimate type. (Shorai has it's own available)

I had trouble getting centurion diagnostics to connect once. I had to switch to a different usb socket on laptop.

  17. Yes - apologies if I have intermixed you with him!

That's the one I use too. Top batt.

However, I use the Optimate Lithium charger as it has specific charge cycles for LiFePo batteries. I would not use a regular charger on a lithium batt.
