As others are posting photos... Apart from the servicing costs being a little higher than your DD and fuel consumption being terrible at best... What's not to like
968 Porsche, had one for ten years and only lost £7000 in depreciation when sold And always looked cool driving it.
In about 1980 when I was kid we went to a BMW dealer to look at a 7 series and when we got there, there just happened to be a 3.0csl parked next to it. Now I suspect my dad already knew this as he was dribbling all over it, whilst my mum was looking at how practical the 735i was. In his head he'd already done the man maths and even though he had three young children including a baby he could still justify a 2 door coupe because it was cool and that's all that mattered, but then my mum got involved and she was having non of it and he ended buying the 7. It was almost fate several months later when he was parking up at a meeting in the 735 when that very same 3.0csl parked up next to him. The owner recognised my dads car been for sale at the same time as his. Not having my mum with him at the time my dad spied his chance and offered to swap cars with him, but luckily for my dads wellbeing the chap turned him down as my mum would have probably killed him!
more a sixtys thing but the old mini clubman auto box was/is a hoot. i like autos in the right car. providing it has adjustment settings and preferably with big feck off buttons for doing the adjusting, 70s style.
My uncle had one of these, a '65 Chevy Impala Convertible, with the 396 engine. It was a bad boy and made my Dad's '68 Impala with a 235 look very tame indeed. Smoooooth.
Ah yes the 850ci! What a car. Had a 750li. Always wanted the 8 but ended up in my dads predicament and had to buy the more practical 7 because of kids. Bloody kids!
While I think the 850 is a great car, I really believe that the 840 is better. I ran the 850 for a while about 15 years ago, and that V12 is a fecking nightmare, service costs are on another planet and you actually need a fuel bowser to follow you, it's that thirsty. I swear if you leave it running while filling up, you'll struggle to keep up with the petrol pump !! Since selling the Exxon Valdez BMW, I have also been lucky enough to own the V8 840. Hand on heart, a much much better car, feels lighter on its feet, has crisper front end feel, service costs about half and does not need the Shaikan well to run it. 840 everytime
Not really robbo, if you buy one now, they are still on the up, so I don't think there's a loser to currently buying an 8 series, but I see where your coming from.
Noobo, to give an answer that really suits, much more info is needed. Daily driver? Investment? Budget to start? Coupe/saloon/estate ? Etc etc.
If budget doesn't matter and at the early end of the timespan....1970 Mustang Boss 429. 0-60 in 5.3 secs and 12.3 @ 112 quarter miles. Costly now though!! If budget matters and the later end of the timespan....Jaguar X300 XJR. Can still be had for a paltry few thousand and it's the last and fastest straight six production Jag so has got to be a good investment. So I guess it comes down to how much do you want to spend and what are you going to use it for?
Ha! Yes I agree. Mine did 14.5mpg whether you tickled it or thrashed it. So there was no incentive to drive is sensibly. Servicing costs were enough to make you weep. The 750 was written off after driving through a big puddle and water being sucked into the engine which seized it solid. Bought a 760li after that, now that was a nightmare, constant engine and electrical problems of which even BMW couldn't workout, but still charged £100/hour to um and arr whilst scratching their nuts! Cost me thousands. Mucked it away on 'we buy any car' in the end. Glad to see the back of it! Grrrr!
I've been running an X308 body Daimler Super 8 for the last year as my weekend and fun car, lovely ride and with 390bhp supercharged lump it still goes well enough. Fuel wise it does 18 - 19 everyday driving and 24 - 25 on a longer run. If you fancy a yank then my old 78 Trans Am 6.6ltr that I had in the 80's took some beating for presence on the road and they're a fair bit cheaper to buy than a corvette.
