Ducati 620ie Non Start (what Else!) - Help Needed!

  1. I would go to ECU connectors and check that all conditions for starting engine are met with multimeter i.e side stand, clutch, neutral and engine kill just to make sure you have continuity to the ECU. Although your bridging the solenoid what about the low current switched 12volt to the solenoid. Is it there ? You could measure the coil resistance and check within spec.

  2. Crikey, alcohol has a lot to answer for...

  3. When you bridge the starter solenoid does the bike fire into life?

  4. No, just spins over. Its does not appear to spark which is why I am thinking switch fault.

To be really clear, the symptoms are exactly like you have either left the side stand down or trying to start in gear so nothing on the switch (BUT, switch replaced, stand switch bypassed and no clutch cut out on this model - 620 2003. Immobiliser display appears to okay, no flashing light with ignition on as the pump is priming)....
Petrol and a rag is my next step....

For the Injected bikes, is it worth buying the Ducati software to check for faults?

  5. Have you checked continuity directly at the ecu ? It's possible although bypassing side stand etc there's a dodgy wire running to ECU. Does your monster monitor the neutral switch also ?

  6. For the sake of £25 it is worth buying the leads from LonElec and then downloading JPDiag for free.

  7. It does at the back of the casings, the light works fine. Both ECU plugs are clean but I guess this means stripping the loom to look for damaged wires then :(.......

  8. Disconnect the battery and remove the two plugs at the ECU. Do a continuity check that kill switch etc do indeed connect to the ecu.
Alternatively as was suggested buy a cable and download jpdiag. Great bit of software that I use on monster 1000 and 1098.

  9. UPDATE: The bike is running, woop, woop.
I traced it back to a broken wire in the middle of the loom around the lower headstock, no surprise it was the 12v feed from the starter switch!
A really awkward fix as the loom goes round both sides of the headstock with no connectors to release the tension.
So its fixed and test rode the bike, crikey these little things handle well, shame its not as quick as I am used to. Having said that, will be changing the tank fuel filter and putting a set of plugs in tomorrow to see if that helps!
    Thanks for the help all.
