748 clutch

  1. Hi all,
I'm going to change the clutch basket and plates on my 748. I will be taking out a alloy basket and alloy plates.
I have been given steel plates that was used in the old ducati monster racing series that are only a few laps old and then got changed for races etc so pretty much brand new, but the dilemma I have is I want to put another alloy basket in but I'm not sure how advisable it is to put steel plates into a alloy basket....? And how much quicker it would wear than alloy plates?
The steel plates I have are quite a bit thinner than the alloy ones I'm taking out so I will have to add a few more plates to make the same width in total.
Or should I buy alloy plates?
I'm going to Le Mans next year on her and plan to do a few track days and general early morning ride outs so just wondered what you all thought.
    Many thanks.
    Stew.

  2. New alloy plates or new steel basket.

  3. Steel plates in an alloy basket will rapidly knock 7 bells out of it.... as Cranker said - either get some new alloy plates, or get a steel basket....

  4. What's your views on a alloy baskets performance over a steel one and does anyone still run with a steel basket or is it a must 'upgrade'..?

  5. On the road - to mere mortals - negligible difference - it's all to do with rotating mass - it takes more power to spin a heavier object.....unless you are bayliss you wouldn't notice any great difference !

  6. See the 996 clutch help thread in the technical help section for dry clutch alternatives.

  7. Brilliant thanks very much all.
