BMW GS owning newbie tempted to join the Red side

  1. Hi all, as in my post in the Newbie section I am a motorcycle instructor and I have owned BMW GSes for 12 years; have had 2 x 1150s, 1 x 1200 and currently have an 800. I have never owned a Duke and am currently tempted by a 57 plate 1100 MS I've seen in my local independent:cool: I guess everybody should own a Ducati at least once in their biking career:upyeah:

The bike that is catching my eye has 16k on the clock, full matching Ducati luggage, comfort seat, Zard exhaust system, touring screen and heated grips. It has had two owners, the first is a very good friend of mine who has owned Dukes for years and has all of his bikes dealer serviced so I know the bikes history. The bike is mintier than a minty thing. It will be a second bike used for touring with 'er indoors on the back as I also own a BMW K75S which I use day to day when I am instructing - the old girl has done 140,000 miles so far.

    Some questions:

    1. What tank bag do you recommend?
    2. It is priced at £4750 - is this about right?
    3. I have a Zumo 660 GPS, where is the best place to fit it and what is the best place to take the power from?
    4. Where is the battery located and is it easy to get to? I like to keep my bikes on an Optimate when not in use.
    5. Is it possible to retrofit a mainstand?
    6. Any specific reliability issues I should be aware of?
    7. What are the oil and filter change intervals?

Any other advice you could offer would be gratefully received.

    Mike

  2. hi mike i like you have been on gs for the last ten years now own a 1200 multi up to now its the best move ive done some of your points if the 1100 is roughly the same as 1200 you can fit a centre stand, battery is located under front seat,i use optimate, also the 660 zumo i have fitted to the handlebar mount and its hard wired to a supply lead already on the bike 20 minutes to fit dont know about tank bag as i use 55litre top box,the service is 700,7500 and so on,the bike will get a good ride out in june as we are hitting italy germany austria switzerland the only item im changing is the screen mra just need a couple of inches on the top enjoy the bike

  3. The 1100 Multi`s battery is mounted under the lefthand side tank fairing. And is semi-easy to come to:smile: Open it once and install a charging quick connector, then it will be easy to use a maintenance charger.

When it comes to center stand, I`m not sure.. But I have understand that center stand to the 1100 is a hard to get item. It is not listed in the Ducati Performance accessories catalog:rolleyes: But maybe SW-Motech ore similar companies make one?

The 1100 and 1200 is completely different chassies, so no interchangeable parts there...

  4. Thanks for the responses so far guys; any other help would be most welcome.

Oh and Merry Christmas to all you Ducatistas!

  5. Just be careful of the grin factor it's addictive :)

  6. I don't own a multi but after riding and owning an assortment of bikes ..... Love my Ducs they have soul :)

  7. That's why I like big twins and have owned a variety of boxer twins - I'm afraid the inline 4 UJM does nothing for me even though they are obviously superbly built and engineered. Give me European bikes anyday.

  8. The air-cooled Ducati motors have a reputation as reliable units. The oil/filter changes on 2007-onwards bikes are every 7,500 miles or 12 months (whichever soonest). The 2 valve bikes have a decent amount of torque and the large fuel tank on the Multistrada should provide a decent range.

There was a standard 1100 MS & an 1100S model. The 1100S had Ohlins suspension, alloy handlebars & some carbon niceties. Some paint flaking around the sump/starter motor is quite common if the bike is used in all weathers, but this is just cosmetic. Otherwise the bike should be robust as long as it is serviced properly.

I would certainly consider a late model 1100S Multistrada if I was in the market.

  9. As long as you can get on with the way the bike looks, the headlight area lets the bike down in my humble opinion, they seem to be a good price since the new model launched, I decided to get a 1200 but of I couldn't have afford one then I suppose I may have considered the 1100s.

    Good luck and merry Christmas!

  10. Do It, I did

  11. I've just gone back to a GS after a painful 2 years.
If you do any sort of mileage (12k plus pa) stay with the GS

  12. Just because you had a negative experience does not mean everyone will, posts like this don't really help to achieve anything

  13. I found my 1000DS Multi the most comfortable bike I've ever had! And the best at covering roads effortlessly at decent speeds ....

  14. Especially if you enjoy driving a Panzer. (well this is a Ducati forum).

  15. The pain was the time it spent at the dealers - when it worked it was brilliant but when the service manager asked me why I was swapping back to a GS I said the multi's not built to do high mileage and he agreed. Mine was an early 1200S touring and I felt I had done the beta testing for Ducati.

APE2DUC - if I really wanted to be negative I could list what went wrong in that 2 years. The bike is brilliant but mine was not built to do 25k. Many GS riders do that sort of mileage.

  16. This is an Internet forum where people are encouraged to give their opinion, a negative experience is just as valid in regard to expected reliability.

  17. But perhaps also a generalization - people who have had a multitude of problems on the 1200, which is not in question here, are in the minority....thankfully

  18. People who do high mileages on them also appear to be a minority

  19. It's the nature of having a bad experience to appear to be a whiney git when saying what you think.

I got lambasted on the AF1 Aprilia forum after I sold my Tuono after waiting 4 months for Aprilia to do a warranty repair and told them how shite I thought Aprilia were.

  20. But what do you class as high mileage? I have a 2010 model and have done 14k and I've had my fair share of issues but nothing too major and it has never left me in the lurch....
