all now fixed new sensor and glen's magic did the trick, bike got serviced at the same time. yup glen's a top bloke, lucky to have him in town.
just in case anyone else is interested. this turned out to be a faulty gear indicator, not sure if faulty before battery was replaced, or failed...
yep glen is exactly who i planned to go see first. no doubt he will sort in 5 mins ;)
