1098 1098 1198 Crank Cases

  1. Does anyone know if the 1098 and 1198 crank cases are the same. I've heard the 1198 are sandcast or is this just on the 1098R

  2. They're not sandcast but the 1198 went over to the new tech vacuum casting process. They're lighter as a result. The R's got sand cast ones Kirchhoff though.

  3. Thanks Nelly

  4. Excuse my ignorance, but what are the benefits of sand cast casings?

I notice my 1098S engine casings looked to be painted and shiny silver, the 1098R ones I have now have a roughness to them.

  5. I'm not sure but I think the sandcast are stronger and lighter
