Hi, I bought a 1098s a month or so ago but due to the weather have only managed to ride it once. I have spent some time fitting a nice dark screen and square section levers, and I am itching to get out on it but think it'll be a while yet. I have a question on the clutch noise - I know they rattle but mine also has a sort of knocking noise. It all goes away when the clutch is pulled in. It also has an open clutch cover and fancy pressure plate. The bike came from a main dealer and was serviced before I collected it. It has a warranty and has only done 6000 miles. So, as hard as it is without actually hearing it - should I be worried? And another thing - when feeding the clutch in I can "feel" it - I have only ever had wet clutch bikes before (30 years of em!) so assume its normal? 'Oh, And its gorgeous ;-)
Hi, I got my first dry-clutch bike a few months ago - 1098S. Mine also has an open clutch cover and "performance" pressure plate. I get the usual rattling that we expect and a bit of a "clacking" if that makes sense ? I definately wouldn't describe it a knocking but it is more pronounced than just a rattle. Doesn't sound bad but very different to previous wet-clutch experience. The pitch/volume changes when I pull the lever, as does feel, again as expected. Be worth meeting up with other dry-clutch riders when we get some warmer weather and having a listen. You're warrantied but need peace of mind. Rich
Thanks Rich, Clacking would describe the noise - probably better than knocking. Which puts my mind at rest! I am just itching to get a decent dry day - but with all the salt that is now out there we need a downpour or two first as well! Think I'll watch the TT video again .....
I know how you feel - got mine late Oct so no warm/dry tarmac to learn how to ride it yet. Not long now though (or so I keep telling myself).....
Hello and welcome, nice bike, but you're right, we need some better weather before getting out there!
The clacking noise is pretty normal in my experience, as its the sound of the plates smacking around in the basket, which is more noticeable with the open clutch cover. May be worth having a look at the basket as mine was toast by 7k. In regard to 'feeling it', I find that I have to slip the clutch for anything below 30mph which is the sacrifice I have to make for a Twin with so much power and high top speed. If there is a sort of groaning noise when pulling away, thats the clutch saying its on the way out. Ive got a black 1098s and absolutely adore it. I wouldnt change it for anything else. Enjoy the bike and enjoy the ownership. Things are about to get expensive :biggrin:
I'm in the same situation as you bought my 1098s a few months ago and still have not really got to use it ! My clutch has the same characteristics as yours, however I had a pronounced judder on clutch take up, once stripped it was obvious the plates were severely worn so fitted a new set of surflex steels and friction plates, the clutch basket also needed replacing (done 9000) as it had deep ridges. Even with it all new and tight fitting with the open clutch cover I still get a bit of clatter, makes me realise I've got something special very Ducati
Hi - similar position having bought a 1198s very recently Had one ride on it on icy roads lol At the moment its a garage ornament - have added quite a few bits mainly due to impatience They are beautiful looking bikes though - even sat in the garage lol My clutch is a slipper clutch and does exactlyt as you describe so dont worry Provided it takes up ok when setting off you should be fine
welcome, clacking good, over clacking like i found out= worn clutch plates and basket, now done and less clackerty (is that a word!) again welcome ; )
