1098, which oil?

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by timberwolf, Feb 14, 2014.

  1. So, I have decided to do the oil and filter change myself and save the £160 to put towards the belt service at the end of the year.

Question is, which Oil do you folks use? I always used fully synthetic on my GSXR, usually silkolene. My mate who usually knows his stuff reckons Motul, Ducati sticker says Shell. What do you use please?

  2. Spry Crisp & Dry

  3. search it really loads on it and a group buy potential

  4. A 999 but I've been using Rock oil for the last 3 to 4 years , changing every year and its ok , although changing every year you could nearly get away with crisp and dry.

  5. Any decent synthetic will be fine, I use Motul in my 853 , quite a few say Silkoline in no good as there bikes tend to use more than with other makes.

  9. 2 of my Ducati's are on Shell Advance Ultra 10W/40. The Desmo is on Rock Oil Synth 4. It's what the dealers have put in them.

  10. motul 300v 10w 40

  11. 15 - 50...

  12. Run with Shell Advance Ultra 10W/40 in my 1098s. Never an issue in both bikes i've had so far. Change oil and filter once a year, job done.

  13. Hmmm...... Its a toss up between the Motul 300v and the Shell Ultra. The Shell, surprisingly, seems to be the cheaper option.

  14. Yep, 300V is expensive. Take a look at Motul 7100 also. I use that as my regular service oil with no issues at all. Still top notch oil, but kinder on the pocket ;)

  15. Motul 300v 15w 50 and after 1000 miles take it out and stick it in the wife's Punto.

That so sounded like a euphemism when i read it back!

  16. Does it really matter as long as it is a branded synthetic and it is changed every year/3000 miles?

  17. There's quite a significant difference across the oil market. The general standards that need to be met regarding viscosity, grades etc. are very broad. A 15 quid costco fully synth is nothing like 50 quids worth of 300V, yet on paper they are the same 'quality'...
The argument is valid as to whether you actually need a specific oil. I use 7100 as my regular service oil and 300V when requested to or solely in DD16RR and Panigale simply because it's able to hold up under the tougher conditions those engines put on the oil.
I started using 300V specifically in Desmo's after it bacame apparent that the full synthetic I was using at the time couldn't service the engine all the time. Above 90 degrees or so, oil pressure light started to flicker. 300V went in and no issue. 4 years on the same bike is still running sweet as a nut. Both oils 15W/50, both fully synthetic, both branded etc..... I switched over to Motul product completely shortly after that ;)
Ya pays ya money and all that, but tbh going an extra 10 or 15 quid on your oil, once a year is neither here nor there, but could/will reap dividends over the time you own a bike.
