Hi Guys I have a very low mileage 1098r, previous bike was a 1098s. I noticed that at times when downshifting it clunks into gear, has anyone experienced this on their R or other 1098/1198 models. Any ideas greatly received, many thanks
Check your chain tension. I have found that a slack chain can cause what you are experiencing. Hopefully it's something as simple as that and not expensive. Andy
Meh, more like owners who thrash a very torquey bike and have little gearbox sympathy. The 1098R gearbox is the same as the 1198 save for 2 gears. That being said, superfinishing the gears makes a huge difference. Mine is butter smooth.
+1 on that. Just done 4 days at Almeria and not one gear missed! I do use an HM quickshifter. I only use it from 3rd up to 6th, always manual clutch down the way. The QS feels super slick and I sense no mechanical violence so it must be set up ok. I believe the Nova gearbox is the Holy Grail.... Is this true? I know they're circa 2.8k ouch... As pointed out, there is a bit of grief with 1098R gearbox's. But its not just 1098R's. Think about it, you're smacking from one steel gear to the next whilst putting down 180+ HP. That's a lot of mechanical stress over a small area.
Thanks for the replies, my chain is loose so have bought the adjustment tool so will give you all an update once I've tightened it, fingers crossed
