848 1098s Ohlins Shock > 848 Evo?

  1. I've managed to get the adjustment I need from my Showa forks on my 848 Evo but am still having trouble getting the sag I need on my Showa rear shock.

I don't want to spend megabucks on a new rear shock but would like to upgrade.

Would a second hand 1098S Ohlins shock be the best bang for buck and offer a better range of adjustment?

    There's one on eBay:

  2. According to the fitment chart provided by the seller, it appears that it will fit an 848 EVO.

  3. Yeah it'll definitely fit - I'm just wondering will the standard (non TTX) Ohlins shock be much of an upgrade over the Showa?

  4. Dude don't do it... I bought a 1098s shock also and it was barely any different, it was defiantly a better shock, more feel but was still SO stiff it was horrific.

You are honestly MUCH better off getting a Nitron mid spec built to your weight or looking at another product like maxton.

  5. Or getting an Ohlins spring that fits your weight, remember shocks on production bikes have to be capable of working at both ends of the wafer thin or who ate all the pies fat bastards. As said above a Nitron would be set up for your individual weight and use requirememnts (dont forget to weigh yourself in full on riding gear) but will cost around £700 so not cheap, a lighter/heavier weight spring and a revalve wont be a lot cheaper but just getting the correct weight spring should work out a lot cheaper and would make a noticable difference.

  6. All valid points, the reason I didn't mention was just because by the time I paid £300 delivered for the shock and £70 for a spring plus a service for peace of mind it was Nitron money and more faff. Not saying the Ohlins isn't good though.

    A few points of FYI....

    1) a hydraulic preload adjuster is a good addition if you are going to adjust the preload ever or carry pillion because it's murder to get in there once the shock is fitted. U need a good c spanner and patience. It's £280 though for the Ohlins one!

    2) fitting the shock is really tricky. On the 848 evo there is a lambda probe in the bottom loop of the exhaust which means dropping the swingarm is limited in movement. Soak the lambda on wd40 for a while and remove it first or u will struggle. Also the gear side footrest needs to come off but that's not a biggy.

It's do-able as a job but just don't allow 20 mins for it as its fiddly, I had a mate helping me

  7. Unless you're well over 110 kg +, you will struggle to get the Showa to work. They are set up for rider and passenger. A std s model ohlins will be a big improvement as long as the spring suits your weight. As said above, 1st time changing the shock is a real pain but doable on your own.

  8. As mentioned, the 1098 Ohlins will still be too stiff. Get the Showa off to Maxton or K-Tech and get it rebuilt to suit you is probably the cheapest option. The Nitron shocks are great bits of kit though and would be my choice to :)

  9. Really tempted to go for the Nitron NTR R2.
I take it it's best to get the hydraulic preload adjuster too?
It's almost another £200 on top of the shock.

  10. Std Ohlins from a 1098s will be too stiff because the OEM Spring is too soft and Ducati wound up the pre-load to compensate. I weigh 140 lbs (a lightweight!) and JHP fitted a stiffer spring with less pre-load to make the rear more compliant. Counter-intuitive, but it worked!

  11. I replaced my EVO Showa with the ohlins and it was basically the same. Got the Ohlins revolved to modify the damping and it was great. If I had to do it again the cheapest solution is probabbly to revalve the Showa. It's not a bad shock, just incorrectly specified for one up riding

  12. Will the 08 1098s ohlin shock fit a 13 ducati 848 evo superbike? Im looking at a used one for now just wondering if someone here ever fit one on theres...thanks

  14. Hi Jaden, I’ve got the ohlins on my evo and it’s a night & day improvement….you’ll need to get it re sprung for your weight to feel maximum benefit…a revalve on the forks is also winner :upyeah:
