I seem to have an unusual oil drip. I've noticed the odd drip of oil on the garage floor, so I took the side fairings off and there was quite an accumulation of oily dust and crap stuck to the inside lower left hand fairing. At first I couldn't see any obvious leaks so I left the fairings off and waited for a drip. It appears to coming from the plug with the three yellow wires. From a quick internet search it appears that the wire comes from the stator/alternator and sometimes oil can seep from it into the wire then follows it down into the plug where it accumulates then drips. The bike isn't losing any significant amount of oil as it only drops about 2/3 drips a week but I'd like to get it sorted because the oily shite build up inside the fairings plays havoc with my OCD. I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem? Is it best to try sorting the leak or just fit a new stator? Thanks. Jason.
Well diagnosed, have a friend in Saudi who had exactly this recently. I think removing crank case side cover and checking sheath for splits followed by cleaning and applying mastic where sheath begins is about the only solution.
Hi m. Can't say where the leak is coming from but I've had this a couple of times where the connector has burned out. I always thought that it was due to dodgy connections in the connector block but when I changed mine, the connectors did seam greasy. I know I'm not helping much here but for starters I would open that connector, clean all the oil out and the connectors then stuff it full of dielectric grease. Might be hard to relocate that r/r connector and if the oil is running down the cable, wouldn't do much good anyway. Might be worth pulling the battery tray off to find out where the leaks coming from. Ian
I believe the oil from inside the generator wicks down the core of the wires, people have tried umpteen different ways to stop it with no definite answer. Some have replaced the wires completely others have tried to seal the ends with silicone or even wicking superglue. Steve Steve
