1098s or 1198

  1. Hi All,

Looking for my next bike to be either a 1098s or 1198 which is what my budget will stretch too :-(

I know the obvious differences between them, my question really is which one will be the best to ride?

Any input good or bad much appreciated!

    Cheers

    Rich

  2. Quality problem you have there!

I'd probably go for the 1198 as the power delivery is better from what I've read (no doubt some 1098 owners will fill us in shortly). I've ridden an 1198S on a test ride, and loved it. Wasn't exactly tame, so goodness knows what the 1098s would be like. Massive power, wheelies everywhere, mad bike. Sounds good on standard pipes too.

I guess the 1098S has the Ohlins, but the Showa suspension is pretty good. I've got a 996 with revalved front forks and Nitron Race shock, which is an upgrade you could do to the 1198 if you felt you wanted to (later, if funds don't permit right away).

Try them both though if you haven't already. Look forward to hearing how you get on.

  3. Hello and welcome! Those who have ridden both will hopefully be along soon to give their opinions!

  5. They can both be set up to 'ride' as well as each other. Question is: do you want the extra 100cc?

  8. I have a 1098s and it's more bike than I'm ever capable of using to it's full potential. It's a fantastic machine.

I've never ridden an 1198, so can't give you a comparison I'm afraid

  9. I've got 1098S and I'm perfectly happy with it. There seem to be mixed opinions about the power delivery - some say 1198 is better, others say it's the other way round. But then you can always fit 14t front sprocket, remap the ECU etc...

  10. 1098s all day long for me, slung a Bazzaz tc/qs on mine with the suspension setup and it's more than capable with a set of termi's for the sound, -1t front sprocket and a qa throttle turns it into a little beast, then all the bling that the s offers as standard plus more than enough power for any road bike... Used it on the track quite a few times and felt like I'd been raped by a rhino by the end of the day.... No way on this earth I'll ever need that whole 100cc more, plus I'm more of a 'bling whore' lol. Down to you at the end if the day though. Gotta be happy with what you spend your hard earned on. Either way you'll have the biggest grin ever each time you open your garage door!

  11. S with Ohlins. You can map any roughness out of a 1098

  12. For what its worth, either as long as you get an 1198 with a red frame!! Just has to be a red frame!

  13. Thanks all for your feedback and comments much appreciated! Are there any huge service bills at particular mileages I should know about? Always fancied a bike with ohlins so the 1098s is appealing, I presume the 1 tooth reduction on the front improves acceleration and power wheelies??

I will hopefully be purchasing later in the summer so stand by for more questions lol

    Thanks

    Rich :)

  14. It does indeed, makes it way better around town to as it tends to surge a little other wise, service with clearance check in combination with belts done ain't to cheap, do a lot of my own to keep costs down but that lot I leave to the pro's. had problems with my fork seals leaking which is common on the ohlins. Easily sorted with an upgrade set of seals which I got done at the same time as a service. Never had the problem since. Interim services needn't be any more expensive than your average bike though so don't be put off.

  15. I went down the 1198 route. Thought i have a newer bike for the same money, ive had a standard and r version of the aprilia rsv mille and although the ohlins felt a little plusher and there was more of a difference on the adjusters, on the road there was little in it. I also preferred the y spoke wheels on the standard bike and that extra 1 on the side of the fairing!. At the end of the day it is down to personal preference and you wont be disappointed in either choice, just enjoy the ride !.

  16. I have an 1198s full termi system and love it. I've heard the 1198 is a stronger bottom end but I can't verify this. Only thing I don't like is the gearbox is a bit clunky what's yours like?

  17. This is an old thread :)

  19. An 1198 is an uncomfortable Diavel; a 1098s is an uncomfortable Streetfighter. :Bag:
And in real life Streetfighters can have Diavels. :p:Mooning:
