1098 1098s Project - Advice Sought

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by LoveBoatCaptain, Jun 26, 2014.

  1. Hello all,

    First post... and first Ducati!

I've picked up a non-running 1098s. It's a one owner bike with lots of nice extras and it's pretty much immaculate.

I'm told that the bike has been to a main-dealer and it needs a new dash / key-set. I've not made any investigation myself yet.

I was thinking of keeping it simple for myself and treating it as a new build. Sell the dash, ECU and lock-set as 'spares or repairs', and put the funds towards rewiring the bike for an aftermarket DTA or Omex ECU, and a Race Technology or SPA gauge. Probably wouldn't be a great deal of difference cost-wise by the time I'd bought a new dash / lock-set, and Power Commander / Dyno-time. At least the aftermarket ECU would allow me unrestricted control of the spark and fuel.

Any thoughts on this? How 'conservative' is the factory ECU? Are there decent gains to be had by using a completely unrestricted ECU?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. have you thought about getting the dash reprogrammed. i've heard that this is possible...

    nice bike by the way!

  3. Send @chrisw a PM, he's the resident ECU magician, I'm sure he'll be able to sort it!

  4. I would price up a new dash at the main dealers and then see if this is a bargain Strumentazione per Ducati 848- 1098 -1098 R Nuovo | eBay

For the ECU all you need is one from an 848/1098/1198/SF/HM flashed to the correct map. There is no immo in the ECU to worry about.

If you can sort a lockset with key then you should be set to go.

I'm not aware of anyone in the UK who can remove the code from the newer clocks. I know Scorpio Electronics in Lincs can clone the data in the clocks to another unit. I do have a contact in OZ who may be able to help. Google 'Rider Logic'. He has been working on using after market clocks with the bikes and can sort the Canbus issues.

  5. Hi Love boat Captain,

If you do decide to go down the aftermarket dash route can I have first dibs at buying your old unit as there is a lovely piece of uncracked glass on it I would like as mine is cracked bad and needs a new one, please pretty please.

    Regards Mooneybravo.

  6. Not seen that on a dash before. I will send an email to my contact in OZ and see what he says.

If the scrolling message says SBK 1098 TSE then you have the stock ECU fitted. For those Termis it should have the DP ECU fitted and scroll 1098 RACING (slip ons) or 1098 RACING EVO (full system).

Do you have a key for the bike?

If you have a mate with a 1098 you could try your ECU in their bike to see if it works. There are no immo issues in swapping ECU's. That would eliminate the ECU from your problems.

  7. and I take it the bike is clean re ownership?

  8. I don't mean any offence but we don't know you.......you most likely are legit ( 99% ) but, if I had stolen a bike and needed to get it running ?????????

as I say please don't take this the wrong way.

  9. oh and lovely bike by the way. im more trying to make the point that anyone can come on here and receive advice that really should be thought carefully about before handing out.if you know what I mean lol. anyhows good luck in your project. my advice is try to keep as standard (dash wise ) for resale value.

  10. clutch slave and pressure plate look standard.

  11. ride the bike before changing to 14 tooth, its a bit of an animal and imo is fine as it is.

  12. pressure plate looks standard, but clutch slave looks aftermarket? Don't the standard slaves have the "star" shaped indent?

  13. The slave cylinder is an earlier Ducati Performance one, I've still got one brand new in the box!

  14. the r&g bits are shaped so you can use a stand on them, but they wont let you remove the wheels.have you sourced a new /second hand clock and lock set or can anyone bypass the fault?surely someone can deprogram the immobiliser.

  15. Having done a bit of reading it would appear that to install a new dash you need the code card to start the immo and key programming process. I would fire an email off to Riderlogic home page

Wayne is a dash expert and will advise you on what to do. He should also be able to supply a dash, code card and keys.

  16. Tell Wayne it is the dash problem I have already contacted him about.

  17. Wahey :) Congrats. Hopefully you've got a bit of a bargain for your work?

I really fancy a 1098 for a track bike but I'm not sure I want to deal with a bike I dont have full control of all the electrics, etc. Might make sense if I can get full aftermarket stuff I guess, although I'd like to keep it road legal as well. The R1 is so straighforward from that point of view.
