1098 1098s Terminal Engine :-(

  1. Well she started making a strange noise the other day between 3-6 rpm as though it had a supercharger, kind of whirring noise. Next started with vibration in the pegs and right bar. Oil dropped to find a load of bits on the drain plug and even a bit of bearing in the strainer.... safe to say the main bearing has failed so it's over with Ducati john for some tlc. Can't wait for this bill.

  2. Welcome to the club :Arghh::Arghh::Arghh:

  3. Sucks don't it.... summer's over I guess

  4. Second hand engine, is probably a better bet than getting it repaired.

  5. Yeh, bit torn on that one.... looking at one I could have for 1.5k which is about what it's going to cost to sort mine. Bit attached to mine knowing it's history etc. Decider will be if anything else has gone or not and if it's cost efective though already thinking of balancing the crank etc on mine lol.

  6. What year is yours?

  7. I did exactly that with my 999 engine £1100 vs £1500 rebuild. Plus I sold the sick 999 engine and did ok.

  8. 2008 with 17k on it

  9. feel for you, mate. couldn't have happened at a worse time! hope you get it sorted quick enough to enjoy a little bit of summer.

  10. If you can find one

  11. Rebuild, riders are advertising titanium rods on eBay, I got a pair off them for £500 a pair not each.

  12. 1198, Hens teeth springs to mind... did look though. Not sure what I'd need to go with it either?

  13. Having had a main bearing failure on my ST4 a few years back, I say go for an engine rebuild with an independent specialist but save yourself a load of dosh by doing the donkey work yourself e.g. remove the engine and do the initial strip of the easy bits. If you stick a secondhand engine in, what's to say you won't be facing a similar situation in the future?

If you get your engine rebuild properly, then if you've a sentimental attachment to the bike, you'll have the satisfaction of a strong, reliable motor for years to come. The reason for my main bearing failure was down to the crank being OVER-shimmed by 0.25mm at the factory according to Rich at Louigi Moto! Can't recommend this guy enough, he knew I didn't have anything like the sort of money you've been quoted and allowed me to strip the engine in his workshop (with help from him when I got to 'special-tool'-type stuff. He then did the measuring, shimming and re-building.

Total cost was less than half what you've been quoted (though this was about 4 years ago) and that included getting the crank balanced at his suggestion, to give the big-end bearings an easier time and allow the engine to spin up quicker in the process. All in all it was money well spent . . .until redundency forced a sale about 6 months later :Bawling:

  14. Have pulled it apart to the point of rolling chassis and ready to drop. John did mention that they have a habit of over shimming them. Trust him 100% with the work and there ain't many folk nowadays you can say that about... see what a closer look brings I guess.

  15. Had my 1098R recently rebuilt at Moto Rapido. These little buggers were a possible cause of engine failure. These are the oil spray tubes that lubricate the cylinders. I was told one or perhaps both were skewed. Maybe, maybe not. What was for certain is that a cost a bastard fortune to fix!

  16. Isnt it great, in the world of disposable component repair tactics, to see and hear of people stripping, repairing and rebuilding not just replacing

  17. Done the 1098 blow up....twice and now working on my 1198:( I know a guy who has got 3 engines in two frames having been tuned by John Hackett who is selling up. Like other posts here though you really don't know what you are going to get unless you have it done yourself. Or a new one:)

  18. Feel for ya Carter, no gonna be cheap.

@ OP: Is this the norm re 1098 engine, or is it down to a lot of hard riding ? Or is it just sheer bad luck ?

  19. Deffo not normal. My mate just sold his 1098S track toy and maan, did he give it some abuse. It never missed a beat and always had a strong pulling engine. I would follow him on my 1098R and wince at his lack of mechanical sympathy. Maybe he was lucky and had a strong un....

  20. Actually, those with more mechanical sympathy seem to have the worst issues...rag it stupid is always my plan (not the multi, it doesn't like being ridden like that, so expecting terminal failure two days out of warranty..). Didn't harm any bike I've had, issues always being related to electrics or natural failure eg spragg clutch
