  1. Hi all.dose having a faulty fuel gauge bring on the engine management light.
Is it worth replacing senda unit or do I go for the eliminator unit and just live it
    Cheers all steve

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  2. Hi Rico
There are many on here who will contribute, unless it’s shorting out somewhere i’m pretty certain that you can’t link it with the management light. There is a separate “low fuel” light already. is this illuminating for starters?

  3. The dash flashes low fuel but there must
The low fuel is flashing on dash at least a gallon of fuel in tank, but engine management light is also on now. Ghanks chris

  4. I would treat the two as separate issues Rico, so A/ you've got the "management warning light" on the righthand end of warning lights, and you can interrogate the display to obtain the error codes - to do this:- depress and hold down button "A" at top of dashboard and then keep it depressed while you turn on the ignition. For code interpretation see below.

I should add that a low charge battery or battery being drained while starting/cold weather etc can trigger a "fault" response from the ECU that isn't always correct. Also - the illuminated light can merely be a "flag" to show a recorded past fault - i.e. it could be that the system is fault-free but the light is still illuminated. If so, this will then extinguish after a short time with engine running after the ECU has gone through it's checking and monitoring routines.

and B/ then you've got the LCD fuel gauge display which normally should show several bars (can't remember - 8 possibly?) when full and then around the point of emptying the tank, the last bar would disappear, and the "low fuel" light would come on.

When you fill tank, does fuel gauge show all bars and fuel light off? if it does then that's a good start. The gauge can be erratic and the readings fluctuate but there can be several reasons for this, and one that you can't control (apart from shaking the tank) is where the remaining fuel sits relative to the tank sender due to the unusual "front and back" design of the tank where separate pockets of fuel can remain. When you are low on fuel - typically, it will progress to show one bar/no bars/low fuel light in that order but then after one minute/10 minutes it could show 2 bars and no fuel light!. This could happen at least twice but it's time to take the read-out fairly seriously after the second time.

  5. That's a lot of valuable iinformation Chris thank you.
Bikes in a thousand pieces at the moment, iv just bought the bike and wanted to do the basic engine service myself,so getting to the air filter has been a interesting day to say the least.
The bikehad been stood for over a year,so battery was shot and the previous owner had tried to jump start it for me before I got it.i fitted a new battery and she fired up straight away but after a minute or two engine management light came onto this is where iam at the moment.
Again thank you for your information.

  6. From what you've told me, I wouldn't worry about the fault light at this stage. If you will not complete and have running soon, and it's stored in damp conditions then I would remove instrument (3 M8 nuts) and bring indoors. It may have been fine outside so far, but they are a ticking time bomb as regards ingress of moisture corroding the circuitry.

Re: air cleaner access - did the tank/seat unit foul on the rear crossmember? - this is pretty much standard now in the UK after even a couple of years. If it didn't foul rear crossmember then apart from tank being new, then potentially the bike has enjoyed a good and dry environment so far!

  7. My old 1000DS used to throw up the EML light along with the low fuel quite often, never affect its running. Low fuel light used to come on around 110 miles from filling up, I could run that bike as far as 220 miles if touring, 160 ish if hooning around, just used the trip meter. I just lived with it.

  8. Did you look up the fault code? as said, 7.1 and 7.2 are the only 2 faults that could correspond with the fuel sensor.

  9. Tank didn't fowl the cross member but one of the fuel pump mounting bolts did had to remove that but that's it.
    Again thanks for the info

  10. No yet still got everything off at the mo ,but it's coming back together soon .thanks chris

  11. Cheers for the heads ip

  12. good, I nearly added that, about the fuel pump fixing screw/bolt :) so yours is about "medium" swollen. :upyeah:

  13. Hi. I have the same issue, asked on the forum a couple of years ago. Engine mgt light goes out as soon as I refuel.

Been told the sender unit fails, someone had dissected one and found that one the capacitors had failed. Apparently a common occurrence with anything electronic. The part is only pence but you have to destroy the whole unit to get to it as the electronics are encapsulated in an epoxy type material.

  14. My fuel gauge is at best erratic - it's great until you get to about 80 miles in then goes the fuel light starts coming on randomly. I have two tanks one at full bananna and one about corgette. If you do take the fuel pump out - replace the seal with the thicker version.

  15. Thanks for info.:upyeah:
