1198 1198 - Cut Out And Now Won't Start

  1. Recently took my 1198 (2009) out for a short ride but after about 1 mile the engine cut out and the bike wouldn't start. Battery is fine and its sounds like it wants to fire but it won't kick over. I have checked fuses and searched around for loose wires. Fuel is new and premium unleaded and I've just completed a 200 mile ride so it had 2 tanks pass through the engine. Can anyone suggest any obvious checks? I suspect it's a fuel related issue. I noted there were posts about a fuel pump relay, could anyone help me find it? Many thanks

  2. Do you have a error code? Error fuel 16 seems a common one if the relay or pump fails. Do you hear the pump prime when you turn the ignition on? The relay is near the battery if I remember correctly. If you hear the pump priming when you turn on the ignition I would put money on a split hose inside the tank. If you don't hear it prime it could be the relay. Both are quite common faults.

  3. Thank you... There is no error code showing on the bike but I don't have a code reader so unable to tell if its something the Dealer would see on a diagnostics scanner Yes the pump primes.

  4. Have a look through the filler cap. If you see a lot of fuel swirling around and or bubbles whilst the pump is priming it's most likely a perished hose. If they have never been changed for some years it's even more likely.

  5. No bubbles but there was a trickling sound and some fuel movement when priming which stopped when primed

  6. Difficult to know without seeing it. Obviously there is some fuel being returned from the pressure regulator but given your symptoms it's fuel related. The pump primes to that excludes the relay. Fuel pump is working as you hear it and see fuel being pumped. The pressure regulators rarely fail if ever. Leaves the in tank pressure hose which are prone to failing due to ethanol and age. Best guess is still a split pressure hose in the tank.

  7. Thanks for your assistance @Petsmith... guessing best take to get looked at by someone more technically minded than myself!

  8. What you describe is exactly how my 1098 packed up
Turned out it was a worn sprag clutch

  9. Hey Sam,

Any update on this post, always good to hear what it actually was and what was done about it.

    TIA

  10. It was sorted after a long wait for a service slot at Ducati… they assumed before any works was the fuel filter or pump but when they removed the tank they noticed a fuel hose had detached and hence no fuel getting around the system. No idea how it happened but they replaced the hoses and fuel filter and checked over the fuel pump. Was left with a new issue of how to get the Termi baffles out which they put in for the MOT… turns out it’s not a one man job and the guy doing the pulling needs muscles and some weight!!! Out now and back to her purring self.

  11. Good news, glad you got it sorted.
Removing baffles isn't normally difficult though - they must have put them in with a hammer!

  12. Baffles can be a pain to both fit and remove on your Termis as they are a little "bespoke" as regards manufacture and even swapping a left for a right hand baffle can cause fitting/removal problems. I spent a good hour hand-fettling mine before I could fit and remove with relative ease. Even hot or cold will make a difference. As Ricky hinted at, easy to fit with a hammer (not suggesting you do at all) but will just compound the problem if you ever need to remove.

  13. they've not be in for 14 years and I hope they never go in again!!
