first valve check 7.5k miles on checking the shim sizes ... one closer shim measures 3.50, to get the desired clearance it should need to go to a 3.60 .... but it looks like 3.55 is the biggest you can get .... that correct? But it depends on if you go by Adjust or Checking Ducati recommendation Adjust All Openers 0.13 - 0.18 All Closers 0.05 - 0.10 Checking All Openers 0.10-0.25 All Closers 0.05-0.25 my clearances on Vertical intake opener left 0.13 intake opener right 0.13 intake closer left 0.09 intake closer right 0.13 - to loose by adjust spec exhaust opener left 0.06 - to tight exhaust opener right 0.08 - to tight exhaust closer left 0.18 - to loose by adjust spec exhaust closer right 0.175 - to loose by adjust spec So ... what do you guys set your clearances to when you do them ?
@Mr.R has firm views on ideal shim settings. It seems to me that the check measurements listed are regarded as within tolerance, so don't strictly require adjustment if they are within these limits. The adjust measurements are what you should be aiming to achieve if the measurements fall outside the check limits and you are therefore making adjustments.
Thanks, I thought as I have it all apart I might as well set all clearances to the best specs, then I should be able to leave it a bit longer. Enjoying do it so will adjust all to best specs, plus my OCD kicks in and then there is no hope lol
Yes, that nagging feeling that it's not quite as perfect as you could have made it. :/ In that case, it's the adjust figures you need to go by. As I said though, @Mr.R may well suggest different or more specific settings for optimum power and reliability.
Would be happy with that, I have other settings that others say are best but it would be good to compare
No. Closers are available from 2.20mm to 4.50mm in 0.05mm increments and openers from 1.80mm to 3.45mm, also in 0.05mm increments.
Agree with Steve sentiments, but if you find you're a fraction out or at the limit of shim availability, you could also try dropping in new 1/2 rings. They flatten over time. Sometimes fitting new rings can bring the clearances back in to tolerance.
found a half ring broke on the H cylinder tonight while taking that apart. these MBP collets, can you still use the old closers or do you need new ones? they sound like a better set to me and as ive got it apart and its still poop weather I might as well look into it cheers again guys
