1198 1198sp Exhaust Swaps - Is It Worth It

  1. I do a bit of lurking here, but my 1198sp has been so reliable and fast that there is little need to ask questions. However, my wife has an 848 evo with the termi exhaust and it certainly sounds nice. She doesn't have the dry clutch noise so maybe that helps. For the SP model the exhaust seems very tame sounding. The issue is I'm really cheap - not cheap enough to go full squid and saw the ends of the mufflers off but too cheap to spring for a new termi system.

Anyway, there are plenty of ebay choices and one that seems interesting is the akrapovic exhaust that's came on the 1098R. I would guess it should fit right up since it's the same displacement (and ebay says so). Is this a basically oem exhaust with an aftermarket logo or something similar to the evo termi pipe (70mm, lightweight)?

Also, it seems ebay (well, ebay sellers) seem to think the same exhaust fits an 848 thru 1198. I thought the exhaust ports were larger on the bigger engines - are they correct?

Sorry if these are old questions - I did search and didn't find quite what I was looking for.

    thanks

  2. Okay, easy answer first, the 1098R and 1198 exhaust headers are the same, the 848 headers do not fit and the 1098 headers do with a modification. The Akrapovic that came with the 1098R as standard will be no louder than a standard Termignoni. In the US, the 1098R also came with a “not for road use” carbon Termignoni (and replacement ecu) that is louder. Neither fit the 70mm race system. You could consider repacking your existing cans with a bit less packing. Any modification to your original system will more than likely require an ecu update/remap. Hope this helps, Andy
