1199 1199 Engine Temperature Issue?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by MonaMona, Dec 3, 2021.

  1. Hey all,

Looking for a some advice. Took the 1199 out for a bit today, and on leaving her running stood still in the reasonably cold air, the engine temp hit around 102-104 degrees and this was with the fan on also.

I’m wondering if this is normal? I know the bike has an intermittent map sensor error that I’m about to sort when the part arrives. But that wouldn’t affect it, would it?

    cheers in advance!

  2. As in it doesn’t go down until the fan turns off again. Fan seems to stay on and it’ll be at 102-104 degrees and not any lower

  3. @MonaMona my guess is that the water level in your radiator has gone down, that’s the first port of call I would check, need to take the rhs fairing off and it’s a bit of a bugger to check, so the next two links might help you as I’ve just had my bottom radiator off to give it a good clean.

This will show you how to check and fill radiator if required, even if the header tank level is ok I would still check the Main radiator

    I
f it’s an 1199 it’ll be six years old or so, and these bottom rads get filled with crap and become ineffective and the only fan the bike has is on the bottom radiator so it’s trying to draw air through a blocked rad, just doesn’t work well after a while, worst case scenario you might have to give your bottom rad a good clean.
Go to post 1571 in this link and it will show you how much crap they collect after a while and why the fan can’t draw any air through it.

I was only intending to change the antifreeze in mine before I laid it up for winter but I got a bit carried away and thought I might as well do a proper job on it.
Just leaving it ticking over on the drive it was noticeable how much cooler it was running.

But check main rad level first before you do anything, good luck :upyeah:

Edit - Also forgot to say , check the tightness of all your coolant hose clamps while the fairing is off, some of mine were a bit slacker than I was happy with.

  4. I 100% agree on the post above,
my 1199 lower radiator was almost fully blocked with dust and debris, and also if you are still running the original Coolant, it may be prudent to have a radiator flush as on 2 1199s I have worked on there was a lot of scale and debris in the lower radiator.
I removed the lower rad and left it to soak overnight and then cleaned between the fins for about an hour (!) until i could clearly sea daylight through the rad.
as above, cleaning the lower radiator ( inside and out) made a marked improvement to the top end running temp

  5. did the same on my 1299 last winter. Lower rad was full of debris. Took a few days of soaking and cleaning, getting to see daylight through the fins.
    Patience is required!!

  6. Amazing advice. Thank you very much everyone.

I’ll get to it next weekend and have her running well again for spring

  7. I found that a sliver of credit card Was brilliant for cleaning/pushing crap out from between the fins…..care and patience required..!

my lower rad is a bit banged up, before i bite the bullet and buy a new one has anyone tried any fin straightening ?

are they a bugger to take out?

theres a few little tools for straightening fins on amazon are they any good?

  9. @southlondonCBR go have a look at the links in my post above, took my radiator out last year, cleaned it and straightened the fins with a modified junior hacksaw blade,..have a read :upyeah:

  11. The rads are fairly straightforward to remove.

  12. thank you very much, superb info, job for the winter, while the mrs knits i'll be threading a ground down hacksaw blade through a radiator

  13. @southlondonCBR I have a pair of Panigale R radiators which are surplus to requirements if you find the need. Give me a pm if so. I replaced the R rads when I found coolant, but it turned out to be the water pump seal, so they may be perfectly OK.
