1200s Choices.

  1. ok Im now actually besotted by the 1200 it covers everything I will want to be doing with a bike. I currently own a 996 (performance) and a 91 900ss (looks and class) but its time to face the realisation that if I want to keep touring and take SWMBO round with me, (she refuses to get on the back of the 996) a radical change of bike is required.

My question is this, The S versions obviously offer the Ohlins electronically adjustable suspension, however is it really that much of an advantage over the "base" models. The reason I ask is that the S specs im looking for are just that little bit out of my budget at the moment.

I know Ohlins is the defacto suspension set up but on this bike would I really notice the difference?

  2. Go for a secondhand one with all of the toys?

  3. I have owned both and I think the advantages for the S is questionable. Yes, the ohlin set up is very, very clever and it DOES work but I am now starting to worry about the cost should things start to go wrong. The standard is a truly wonderful piece of kit in its own right, you won't be disappointed.

  4. Thanks both for the quick replies.

Iforb, Its the second hand market im fishing round in just cant quite get to the brand new target prices.

Ojobear thats a useful insight and has got me thinking. The reason I ask about the suspension is the mention of the actuator moto problems on the rear shock. £800 Replacement, Sheesh! I might get a basic abs model and "bling" her up with carbon so to speak.

  5. Mine is back at the weekend after having more ' bling' done. I will post some photos so you can have look at what can be done.

  6. Ah got you. I like the toys, but they are just that really. You could go for a standard one and get the shock and forks sorted out and built for your weight. Though the time it really works well is with a pillion as you can stiffen it up very easily.

  7. Which ever model you decide on you won't regret it, had mine a week now and all I can say is its awesome!! The power, comfort, its like riding a 150 bhp mountain bike compared to the BM Adventure I had a couple of years ago!

  8. So, ABS, Is that an absolute necessity given the traction control and engine mapping?

  9. Before I had it on the Multi, I'd have said "who needs ABS?"

After a couple of idiots chopped me up and I had to ram on the anchors as hard as I could, I'm now very glad I've got it! It just works and stops you having to worry about dumping the front.

Only you can decide if it's worth it to you, but I'm a convert to it now.

  10. Agreed.
Being able to change the suspension preset and damping instantly on the fly is wonderful, but it is undeniably an expensive luxury. We all managed without before!

  11. Ive had a standard non ABS model for 2 years & love it. It was serviced last week & I was lent an S to use so was able to compare both. I did play around with the suspension settings & came to the conclusion that I was glad that I didn't opt for the more expensive model. 2 things I did notice were the knock from the front forks when braking others have experienced & also having recently fitted Michelin PR 3's how much better the bike handle's then with the standard Scorpion's.

Do yourself a favour, save some money for extras & get a standard one.

  12. Ok so now iv,e gone and done it! put my name down to an 2011 1200 abs with a new set of luggage! Now looking forward now to crunching a few miles! :upyeah: Oh and its bright red!

  13. Congratulations you will enjoy, and it's the right colour!!
I've had bikes with and without ABS and I must say it really does give you that extra confidence when the roads are wet and greasy as the are most of the time at present!!

  14. My rear D-ES shock and is shot and awaiting a replacement, thankfully under my extended warranty cover. I think the standard bike with ABS is really all you need and drops an additional source of possible problems once the bike gets older?

  15. Red issss the fastest colour:)

You did the correct thing, if I had to do it all again I would opt for the non Ohlins version with abs!

  16. For the difference on cost between the S and the std version, you could buy an aftermarket shock set to your specs with remote preload adjuster, have the forks revalved to your spec and still have a couple of grand over for anything else you may desire.

  17. 1 week, tomorrow and im in the club!!!!!!

Anyway you will not be sorry this is a brilliant bike I`m almost evangelical when telling people how good it is
Btw get on AltRider: Venture On or Touratech and buy a front cylinder guard it really finishes off the front of the bike.
