1260 1260s - Veering To The Left....

  1. Anybody else noticed their 1260 pulls to the left if you take off both hands? Found it quite unnerving, couldn't counteract it using lower body either. Not that I charge around no-handed all the time. Assumed it was due to the weight of the single swing arm.

Watched a video on Youtube on re-aligning forks and decided to give it a try. Pull completely eliminated and steering felt improved. I was surprised something this obvious this wasn't checked at the factory.

Just had new tires fitted and the bloody pull is back and the front end feels shit, much more noticeable than before. I'm amazed at how sensitive fork alignment is and easily it can be disturbed when removing the front wheel.

You learn something new every day with a bike.....

  2. I'm surprised at your finding that having a new tyre fitted caused the pull to the left/fork alignment problem to return. To change the tyre the wheel has to be removed and replaced, but nowhere in that process is anything to do with fork alignment touched.
Having replaced the wheel, and before fully tightening the axle and pinch bolts, it is good practice to apply the front brake and bounce the forks up and down a few times to help seat the axle properly. Maybe this step was missed by your tyre fitter?
Apart from that there is a natural tendency in the country for bikes to steer slightly to the left, but that is normal and caused by the road camber.

  3. The video was along the same lines but was done with the bike on a pit stand and involved loosening the axle clamps, lower triple clamp bolts and top center bolt and bouncing the front end 5 times. The tricky bit was getting off the bike and tightening the bolts up without moving the steering. It genuinely eliminated any pull and was worth while in my case. Looking at the distance between the lower clamp and the axle clamps it seems quite probable it would be easy to disturb the alignment ever so slightly once the axle / front wheel has been removed. I'll be repeating this again soon as I get the time because I now know the difference it can make.

It was more than a slight pull first time round, seems more noticeable this time to the point of annoying knowing it can be dialled out quite easily. The joys....
