749 13t Front Sprocket ???

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by nev749bip, Aug 23, 2014.

  1. Apologies if this has been discussed before. Did a quick search but couldn't see anything.

I'm thinking of fitting a 13 tooth front sprocket to my 749. A few questions ...
Has anyone on here done this ?
Does it make much difference ?
Would I need to take a link out of the chain ?

    Cheers

  2. Can you even get a 13t sprocket?

Personally I wouldn't even consider it, even a 14t is small but still OK although a 15t is a better option even if it requires a new rear sprocket & chain to get the required ratio.

But going down 1 on the front should mean you won't need a new chain as opposed to a 3t increase at the rear (which gives a similar ratio change) that would almost certainly require a new chain.

  4. I would also think that you risk chain-swingarm abrasion as the radius at the front sprocket will be reduced in height. I run a 38T or 39t rear. What you are looking at would give the same as a increase of 6 teeth on the rear over standard ie 42 rear.!

  5. Thanks for all the info, really helpful. Gonna go for 14T front /43T rear and a 520 chain. Let's see if it gives me more drive out of the corners.

  6. Did that with mine and it made a great difference, especially around town. Also improved fuel economy too.

  7. 14t/43t sprockets and chain fitted and went out for 20 mile ride today. Bike feels a lot livelier, especially low down, better and smoother between 20 - 40mph. Revs are noticeably higher (obviously ) on motorway at higher speeds but not disturbingly or annoyingly so.

Well worth the £150 for the chain and sprocket kit.

Track day at Anglesey on Friday, let's see if it feels better on the track as well, hope so !!!!!

  8. Found exactly the same when I did this. Fuel economy may be slightly better too.

  9. With that gearing you may get flat out up to rocket!

  10. Can I ask where you got the chain and sprocket set from? I've been looking at doing this to mine but unsure about which one to go for.

  11. Bike torque racing - AFAM sprockets and chain. They only do the 43T rear sprocket in alloy but it is nice

  13. I did a sprocket/chain swap on my GSXR and LOVED IT!
Huge difference on short tracks, like you said "coming up out of the corners".
I lost piles of top end, but other than midnight blasts down an empty 4 lane, I never realized the top end reduction on tracks.
I am so very much ready to do this to my 999.
Thanks for the post. Thanks guys for the referrals as to where you got your stuff.
