    Changed the timing belts
Finally changed the timing belts on my '04 999. With close to 14K now, I thought I'd better change the belts and check the valve clearances.
Valve clearances are still good, with just one of them getting in the upper part of the acceptable range.
Before I changed the belts I checked the tension on them. The belt for the vertical cylinder measured 80Hz and the horizontal cylinder's belt 85Hz, which I thought was excellent for the 5-6 yr old belts. Belts look and feel good. I set the new belts to 110Hz.

  2. that is a record to beat for sure, especially with all that heat out there 'n all ;)

  3. Its as much time as distance

  4. Er... no.

My Hypermotard just clocked 35,400 miles as I had the MOT yesterday and the tester complimented me on consistent 10,000 mile years as the last 3 year readings were 15,000 then 25,000 then 35,000.

Given that my belts were changed two years ago, I make that likely to be 20,000 miles?

  5. Exactly..10yrs one old belts is far more risky than 30k miles in 2 yrs imho

  6. So are we talking oxidations then ? What happens in 'time' out of interest, surly it would be the enormous amount of direction change the material has to take.. I have perfect compound rubber tyres on my AJS that are 32 years old and show no sign of deterioration :)

  7. Isnt the fear that, over time, the engine belts 'fix' their shape and deteriorate, so when started it increases the risk of failure either slippage or breaking?

  8. I got 20,000 miles not klm out of a set in my 851.
