Hello, I've had my evo (2011 plate) about a year now and it's due new tyres. When I bought it the mechanic said he'd stick in the 14t for free when I got my tyres done (about £20 for the sprocket) and said it would improve it a lot, especially as I mainly use it for commuting. The problem is, after the past year I don't know whether I can't see any problems with the current set up or I'm that used to it I don't know what I'm missing as everyone seems to be raving about dropping the sprocket and Ducati only put 15t in for emission regulations. Coming from an inline 4 600, at first I thought it was a bit stuttery, especially below 3500-4000 revs but I ride the bike higher than that now and rarely notice, though I do have to get over 80mph before I can get into top gear, but that doesn't bother me, and I do feather the clutch a lot. I love first gear as it just goes on forever. So, am I missing something even better and what characteristics can I expect if I change the evo to 14t? will it reduce what 1st can do, will it make mpg better/worse/no change, what revs can I expect to get down to? Thanks.
It makes a bit of difference. Not much - raises the revs a bit when driving in traffic so it takes the engine out of the stuttery area. I found it helped a bit and had no adverse effects. No idea what quantified effect it has on mpg as that's not an area I care about. If I was bothered about mpg I'd have got a C50 Honda.
Stick it on and try it. Whats the harm? Fwiw I drop one off the front on most bikes when its time to do the c&s
Cheers. I'll give it a whirl then. The only harm is having to pay to swap it back out again as I'm no mechanic
Change it, it does make a good difference and all you really lose is a few mph of the top end, done it to mine
