1200 Enduro 17” Front Wheel?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by MotoNik, Jun 2, 2020.

  1. Just wondering if anyone has ever tried a 17” wheel on an Enduro? I’m sure the answer to this would be “don’t buy an Enduro” but the simple fact is I’d never move away from the bigger tank. And I think if I’m honest I’m not going to be doing much off-roading, so a more road-biased set-up would benefit me for more of the time.

  2. Where are you based?

I’ve a front wheel in the garage that you’d be welcome to try.

  3. Fork length could be an issue due the different diameter of the wheels. Not insurmountable but might cause an initial bit of head scratching.
If someone knows length of a “normal” muts forks compared to the enduro that would give you a starting point.

  4. Thanks, that's very kind. I'm in the South West, not far from Devon, although would be willing to travel for such an experiment.

The only thing I'm wondering is if the Enduro fork bottoms are different to the "regular" bike, I terms of spacers.

I think any difference in fork length could probably be dialled out by adjusting the preload on the Skyhook, and maybe even dropping the yokes a touch.

  5. The front will already be lower due to the smaller diameter of the 17” wheel.

  6. Dropping yokes would accentuate the difference even more.
It would make steering angle steeper.

  7. Agreed - I was mainly thinking if any additional fork length needed offsetting.

  8. I basically want Ducati to build me a Pikes Peak with a 30L tank!

  9. Im in York, long journey!

    If you’re ever passing.......

  10. Sadly I'm unlikely to be "passing" - although it's possible I'll head north again once things start getting a bit more normal again. I need to do another trip!

  11. I put 17s on my old 1150GS and it was fantastic. Essential mod for road riding IMHO.

  12. Thanks efixe. I don't use FB so can't read the post, but I appreciate the feedback. I wonder why he changed back?

  13. Don't really understand why ducati don't offer a larger tank option. So people can either buy as standard or straight away upgrade. I love my 33Litre tank or 32.75L is about as much as I can get into it once ran out.

  14. Here is a copy paste of his answer

The bike is definetely more nimble on a 17", almost to the point of being nervous. Turn-in is super crisp, and it also widens your choice of tyres to much sportier models.
There are two hurdels to overcome though.
1)You need to find a different mudguard and fabricate a bracket (The one from a 1200 is not a straight fit).
2)You need to fabricate a custom tone-ring for the ABS, as the change in diameter throws an error.
Honestly I reverted to the 19"

  15. Thank you for taking the time to do that, it's really appreciated.

As it would happen, I was watching a YT review of an 1100 Scrambler yesterday - with a spoked wheel. It had very similar looking fork bottoms, twin discs, and an ABS sensor ring. I reckon that would slot straight in.

The other thing I've considered is having my standard wheel re-laced with a 17" rim.

  16. My thoughts exactly - surely a GT version would benefit from the larger tank. Maybe it's because the seat is so damn uncomfortable they know people will stop after two hours anyway. It's no coincidence that I have an air cushion on my bike!

  17. I wonder if you can just buy just the center hub and use it on another 17inch spoked wheel instead of converting a perfectly good OEM 19" wheel .... ?

  18. I did wonder about getting a secondhand 19" OE wheel off ebay and having that converted. That way I can revert to 19" if I want to.
