I beg your indulgence on resurrecting a months-old problem. Several of you were gracious enough to offer your suggestions why I would randomly loses spark on the vertical cylinder while riding. After replacing the high-tension coils with units from Chris @ CA Cycleworks & new pickup coils (w/ wiring) from Electrex World, the bike still refuses to start & backfires loudly while cranking the engine. After consulting both the Haynes & the Ducati shop manuals (as well as the input from this forum & Chris at CA Cycleworks), I am quite certain that all of the relevant wiring is correct. When installing the new pickup coils, I was meticulous about properly setting the air gap & the ignition timing. So, without inundating you with any more details, do you have any other thoughts on other areas to look for the source of the problems? Thank you so much. Kit
I have heard of two instances in the last couple of years where pickups from Electrex have been wired the wrong way round. This inverts the phase of the output pulse and changes the ignition timing by the width of the pulse and will give similar symptoms. Try swapping round the pins in the ignition module connectors.
Thank you for the response, Derek. For clarity, I assume you are referring to the 2-wire pins in the ignition modules coming from the pickup coils. Am I correct? I believe that I might have tried this initially after I had installed the Electrex HT coils a few months ago. But...I will do so again. Again, thank you.
I reversed the 2-wire connectors from the pickup coils to the ignition modules. Engine still backfired & failed to start. HOWEVER, Chris at CA Cycleworks had sent me a 2nd set of HT coils after the engine failed to start with the 1st set of HT coils he had sent. So I installed these HT coils & (voila!) the engine started instantly. Now I need to run the bike to see whether the new pickup coils I installed solved the original problem of the vertical cylinder losing spark. Fingers crossed!
Good news, so the coils were no good presumably with the wrong resistance. Had you swapped the pickup wires back?
Yes, I switched the pickup wires back. I'll keep you posted on whether the original issue of the vertical cylinder dying is resolved.
