Hi All, I picked myself up a 1997 748SP (1st Ducati) and finally got it on the road. Well, sort of. Put on new tyres a couple weeks ago and the back tyre has now rubbed a hole in my carbon rear hugger. Touching at the point where there is a recessed spot that is in line with the exhaust above. Using 180/55-17 on the rear and 120/70-17 instead 120/60-17 on the front. Any thoughts on why the tyre is rubbing and how to fix the problem? Also, anything else i need to watch out for? There is less than 5000 miles on on the clock and it was sitting for over a decade inside. Belts have been changed as well as all fluids and a new battery added. Thanks in advance.
I have a 748SPS and the same thing happened to me and wore a hole in my Carbon hugger. For me, it was due to the tyre growing through getting hot as it clearly had not happened before with the previous owner and the hugger had been on the bike for a while. Mine had been standing for some time but I completely rebuilt the bike, the best course of events in my case. The clutch pushrod can break if it is the old type and may require replacement to the newer modified one if it does break, which they often do at some point.
that is an unusual one, and a mystery that's hard to solve, as apart from someone fitting a different swingarm or a tyre inflation or heat problem as Ian mentioned it's a real head-scratcher. Skimpy carbon items can change shape slightly in 25 years but doubt this is a factor here.
Can depend on which way the eccentric has been turned to tension the chain. ACW brings the wheel down and away from the hugger, while CW brings them closer together.
This is what happened to me, on my 916, wore a hole in the hugger, rotated the eccentric 180 and problem fixed
If I remember correctly, to fit the DP Hugger one needs to drill and tap a hole in the fwd RHS of the swing arm. The previous owner may have drilled it “too low” so that the hugger touches the tyre slightly once up to temperature. Also, can’t remember which way around it is but the manual states the eccentric needs to be either above or below the 0degree horizontal line. Best check the manual to see which way it should be. My brain seems to think it should be below the line (0 to 90 arc) which means one turns the eccentric anti clockwise to tighten the chain.
The problem with the hugger will almost certainly bee down to the chain adjuster as others have mentioned, seen this a lot over the years!
Apologies everyone! Work and life got in the way. Thanks everyone for your expertise. Pics to folliw.
