1997 900ss Clutch.

  1. Recently sorted new chain and sprockets out on a separate thread. Thank you all that helped prevent the disaster that was waiting to happen. Less spectacular but equally important, my tacho drive issue.
    Moving on.
Had this bike for 20 years and the clutch was always noisy. I know it's a family trait.
Anyway...against my better judgement after the success of the above, I rode on the wave of euphoria and decided to go another step forward. I blame grapes from the Devils cellar but it doesn't really matter now.
(I've no idea how to attach photos on here).
    Issue 1.
Clutch cover came off fine along with rubber gasket except there are two holes in the metal cover where the (hex) bolt holes are larger than the rest. ...v. roughly at 12 and 9 o'clock. I didn't really need to remove these as the head of the bolt would have passed straight through. The remaining bolts in the rubber gasket had metal spacers therein. I have a 748 on a ramp in the corner that looks similar and I think I could spy that a larger hex bolt is fitted. Is there any reason for this at all?
    Issue 2.
Unbolted the pressure plate and (predictably) the push rod came out with it. The 2 x O-rings were in position and fine. Those O-rings presumably stop stuff going where it shouldn't. Whilst I'm faffing about navel-gazing, does this shift need to be drifted out of the plate and reinserted so the seals can seal.
    Issue 3.
The plates came out OK. 9 plain and 7 friction. The steel basket had some saw teeth pattern going on but there was no discernable play in the bearing that was of any concern. I've parked removing/replacing that. The tangs on the plates had T-shaped tops. Goosed IMO. The friction material left...although visible was negligible.
The only issue I had with the clutch (ignoring noise) was that it slipped v. briefly on occasion from a standing start but was faultless after that with decent lever pressure.
I'll get replacement friction plates. I heard that one friction plate has material on one side only....mine doesn't...it virtually has none on any. Is that correct. The steel (none-friction) plates seem fine too...not blued or burned in any way.
    Issue 4.
Got a milky oil level window.
Don't particularly want to remove the basket to remove the case as I don't have the skill or tools.
More than happy to leave it be unless there's an easy fix that someone can suggest. I don't do may miles so this particular problem is user made.
Any suggestions on any bits above gratefully accepted.

  2. Issue 1. From your description, sounds perfectly normal 2 of the bolts are long and for holding the clutch case on, they pass through the cover. The spacers come as part of the gasket.

Issue 2. You can put rod and plate back in together, I certainly have.

Issue 3. They sound worn, and will be noisy the more play there is. The half friction, from memory, is thicker and goes at the back. But I can't recall for sure. Someone will confirm this.

Issue 4. Sounds like it's not getting up to temp, and water, from the shit UK damp weather, is getting in and it's not burning off. I've had his before on a Suzuji 1250 Bandit. A really good long run should burn it away.
