916 1997 Sps Filler Cap

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Kevin Tallant, Jan 7, 2022.

  1. Long story, but my filler cap and only key seems to have got losted whilst 1997 sps was being restored. Did the original cap have elephant logo? Trying to replace ignition barrel and tank filler looks with same barrels as I hate having multiple keys! Seen sets on ebay, but £300 is a bit painful at this late stage of chucking money at it.

  2. My 97 / sps has a plain Jane, but this could've been replaced at some stage in it's life, but who knows really.
Stuff left over in the parts bin might have been installed if short on the correct item at that time when assembling by the Italians.

  3. As Cagiva sold the Ducati brand in 1996, I believe they were all non-elephant logo filler caps from 1997.

  4. Yes. Change of ownership of Ducati in 1996 means no more elephants on the parts (except leftover parts) and a change in the decals on the tank and fairings

  5. You can buy Chinese copies for very little (complete set of 3 locks including ignition barrel and fuel cap) but the quality is not great. Good enough to get you mobile and secure though

  6. Hi Kevin, if you get a replacement cap with a lock and dismantle the latch and lock assembly you can remove the barrel from the fuel cap. All easy stuff with a Phillips driver in 5 mins. Insert your ignition key and see which tumblers in the fuel cap barrel cylinder do not align with your ignition key. Various options then are-
-rearrange tumblers to get better alignment, this may work or at least get a closer fit.
-file down protruding tumblers to be flush with barrel cylinder,
-just remove any tumblers that don’t align.
Ok chances are any old key might now open the cap but whose gonna nick your fuel these days.

  7. Cheers all, somehow the filler cap + lock & only key got lost in painting process, so all we have is ignition barrel without key.
Handy if dose not have to be elephant one.
    Regards Kev

  8. quick release cap??

  9. I been thinking about that.

  10. I recommend the Harris one mate there very good.

  11. I'll have a butchers, think I may know locksmith who can cut new key from original ignition barrel if I go down that route.

  12. Recently bought a twm quick release. Nicely made and the opening action is slick. The colour of the red bit comes in a variety of colours too such as black, gold red etc.

  13. I've went for the Harris one, growing up a few miles from there Hertfordshire HQ it seemed right & got decent cash price. Think they are all very similar TWM, Harris etc (probably same Chinese factory supplier)
