1998 750ss purchase on the way.....

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Toomanybikes, Oct 1, 2012.

  1. So, I have done my research and sourced a potential mint 750ss.
Less than 15,000 miles, 2 owners and it looks A1 condition. I have had 2 Pantahs so I know about the basic stuff I should look for, but can you guys give me your top 5 things to look for before I part with my cash? I am planning on riding home (200 miles) on the day, so I'll give it a thorough going over!

  2. Whether there is much wrong with it or not, you will soon be spending out on it..........that's what they are for.....

    Cush drive rubbers

    Clutch

    Regulator / Alternator

    Fork seal leaks

    Leaky / rusty petrol tank

There you are, that's five......but others would have a different list.

  3. Yes, having owned 2 Pantahs has taught me that....I'm already searching for a single seat unit!

  4. Is it a carbed or IE SS?

  5. What attracts you to the 750 as opposed to a full blown 900SS ?? I am sure that it is great bike, but 150 cc is 150 cc, with that bit more power ???

  6. If the 900SS is blown, I reckon I can see why he is going for a running 750.....

  7. THat is terrible !

  8. It's a carb model

  9. no preference over a 900, just found an inexpensive 750 first

  10. OK.....Headstock bearings; Rough running at low revs; Fuel filter / Pump; Wheel bearings; Flappy fairing (bits missing); Rev counter not working....

    There's another six...

  11. Cracks in the swingarm round the pivot point, cracks in the top tubes around the headstock, play in the tophat bush/bearing in the shock, r-pins or split pins missing from brake pad pin.

Theres a few more for you to mull over.

  12. I too went for a 750. The main reason was the price. My budget was £1500 and for that money you get a really nice 750 or a 900 that needs some tlc. I wouldn't have bought a 600 as I occasionally take my wife as pillion. I find the 750 is plenty for me and I've had a TL1000s and Cagiva V raptor 1000 in the past so I'm used to bigger capacity bikes. I find the 750 a really nice bike with plenty of grunt for overtaking. It certainly feels far more useful than the 66bhp quoted power suggests. Not sure if I'm right but I thought that the 750 didn't have the problem with the cylinder studs snapping off like the 900 did.

  13. Got my insurance sorted through Swinton. £198 fully comp with £4.99 p/m breakdown. Off to collect the bike on Friday......

  14. Collected the 750ss yesterday! Mint, mint, mint! Wow, the previous owners did a great job of looking after her and probably never been in the rain. 13,000 from new (it's a 98 carb) with nice JAC cans. Had a few miles to adjust to her then straight onto the M4 for 120 mile ride home - Non-stop! I got all the old MOT's and quite a few bills but will probably do the belts and oil just to be safe. Beautiful bike and it felt tight and strong, with no obvious problems. I've got the day off on Friday so I'll swing by Dave Robinsons for a once over then head out towards Brighton for a sneaky ride. She even has a private plate worth £300. You guy's don't even want to know what I paid for her....

  15. Yes we do.....

....and the plate is.......something like DUC 750S???

  16. Almost right. I won't divulge the EXACT number plate, but it is Ducati related. I know you are all dying to know - £1300 (advertised at £1850).

  17. Sheesh, you managed to book something in with Dave? He's always so busy I get my bike stuff done elsewhere!

  18. I didn't book it in. I just turn up and he has a look and makes his recommendations. Then I book it in!

  19. We need pictures! :upyeah:

  20. We urgently need pics! Sounds like you got a really good deal especially with the private plate. I paid £1450 for mine a couple of months back. It's standard and original, 19,000 miles and lovely condition. Would have liked some noisy pipes but I'm very happy with it. They may be one of the lower spec Ducatis but they still have what it takes to make every ride feel special.
I wouldn't swap it for any other bike at the moment.
