1st Gen Multistrada 1200s Another Abs/dtc Question

  1. My 2010 1200S has developed the known ABS and DTC failure with the speedo still working.
So far I've not been able to find out why.
The problem suddenly appeared on my test ride after replacing the gear position sensor.

The cable strain point on the wiring loom on the bottom yoke has been checked and found good,
Both wheel speed sensors give the same resistive readings of 750 ohms one way, open circuit with reversed polarity.
Disconnecting the big snail-cam connector at the ABS unit I was able to read these same sensor readings at the connector so the loom connections are good.
Both sensors are mounted within limits and remain shimmed as they have been since the bike was built.
Both phonic sensor wheels are solidly mounted and within axial runout limits.
I even changed the speedo unit to my old one ( replaced when the odometer filled up) without any luck.

    What's left? I'm stuck.

  2. Have you disconnected the battery at all before the problem arose ? Andy

  3. You need to check the suspect wire on the bottom of the yoke is not internally broken. A visual inspection may give the impression all is fine but inside the copper strands could be severed.

  4. Thanks, yes..insulation cables stripped, wires inspected visually and electrically. Connection confirmed from ABS unit to sensor.

  5. Yes. Battery removal is necessary to disconnect and reconnect the gear position sensor. This connector lives alongside the rear wheel sensor connector in the battery box. I've disconnected the battery several times while working on this fault. What are you thinking of?.

  6. Are all cables connected to the battery?
ABS cable is an extra cable to the positive terminal, perhaps slipped down?

  7. From my own experience, there is a power lead to the ABS from the positive battery terminal. If you miss reconnecting it, both ABS and traction show up as a fault. Andy

  8. That took us a bit of finding didn’t it mate :joy: Very easy to miss this and no sign of anything else wrong if you do.

  9. was this an OEM part? Is it correctly installed and fully functioning? As the issue arose immediately after fitting this part and as this predated the removal of the battery to disconnect the ABS connector to test for continuity, I’d look at the gear position sensor.

I’m not 100% sure about the 2010 model but for sure, on later models, the BBS needs to know what gear the bike is in otherwise it ‘disables’ the ABS and DTC as their intervention is linked to gear, road and engine speed. I’d need to check a wiring diagram to be 100% certain on your year bike.

  10. Thanks Andy and Aero,
You were right, the cable had tucked itself away elsewhere during all the investigative work.
I reconnected EVERYTHING and excitedly rebuilt my bike this morning but sadly the problem is STILL THERE! Gosh I was disappointed.
My logic is now circular and short of starting all over again, I'm stumped.

    Robin.

  11. Yes, it was an OEM Ducati part (€150 ish) as after 220,000 km the old one had been playing up in wet weather for a while. You are right about the connection to other systems and the gear position also connects to the ECU and thus to the throttle position map, this can get uncomfortable so I am familiar with the symptoms.
The new gear position sensor is working perfectly however and reports all gears and neutral correctly.
The battery was disconnected while fitting the gear position sensor to gain access to it's connector which lives in the battery box so these events were concurrent.
I have now connected the previously forgotten ABS positive lead cable but the problem persists.

    Robin

  12. Please forgive my dumb observation but I feel for you, of course after battery disconnection DTC defaults to off in 2010 MTS, you have considered that haven't you?

  13. Just a thought, but have you taken it out for a ride? The ABS light stays on until it reaches a few mph. That still annoys me after a year. Spinning one of the wheels won’t work as feeds off both sensors I believe.

  14. Yes, it's the only way i know to check it all. Each time down the street until the DTC OFF warning comes up, about 100 metres or so, then a u-turn and back. Speedo working, ABS light on.

  15. Ah crap, hoped it might be something as simple as that. Hope you get it sorted soon, niggles like this are a PITA to track down.

  16. Its always good to re-check the obvious. The DTC OFF warning triangle actually flashes up whether or not the DTC system has been enabled after a battery disconnect.

  17. Noted re the gear sensor. However, at this stage, and after the tests you’ve done with a multimeter, you’re really rummaging around in the dark. The best thing to do is to connect the bike to a decent diagnostic computer which will identify where the issue lies. It will show it as a short or open circuit on one of the ABS sensors (or maybe elsewhere). Somewhere within the circuit something is causing the voltage the BBS and ECU expect to see to be pulled down below the expected threshold, causing the control units to see it as ‘no signal’ and thus throw the error message. Whilst I’m no fan of ‘shotgun parts’ diagnosis, in the absence of detailed diagnostics have you thought about buying a new OEM front ABS sensor and connecting it?
