1st tour to the nurburgring is now being organised , and i would like a little advice from some of you that have already been in europe on a sportsbike , as this is my 1st time Luggage wise i will be going for the kriega us 40 combo ( 20lx1 10lx2 tail packs ) as recommended by royalwithcream which i think offers great carry and space options .It can also transfer from different bikes , for when i finally upgrade to a ducati As i shall be travelling down in one piece leathers and race boots which aren't waterproof , i was just wondering which waist pack to go for that will carry essentials and spare visor ? + as my boots aren't waterproof could somebody recommend me a decent pair of overshoes incase i get caught in some rain , which will more than likely happen , i have a all in one rain suit but can't stand wet feet This is my 1st ever venture into europe and really looking forward to it ( like a kid at xmas ) so advice would be great , also whats the security like when parking up at night other than alarms what else do people use as a way of keeping thieving bastards away
Book into a hotel with a garage, and use plastic bags for your boots. If you have touring boots, may be worth a reconsider unless your race ones are all day comfy You planning on going just to stay at the Ring and ride round and round or go see a lot of the local roads too?
cheers for this , my race boots are all day comfortable just can't stand wet feet , we are riding to the ring , spending a day at the ring then moving on up to Celle in Germany as this is where i was based in the army , thinking of a bum bag ( gay i know ) but just need to get to essentials + carry a spare visor
1st or the 2nd of september and then back on the sunday ready for work on the monday , there is going to be 4 of us i think , looking to go down to the chunnel over to calais stop there the night then next day down to the ring , then onupto Celle in germany , all the time trying to stick to a scenic route
As it's your first time at the nurburgring be very careful as a Saturday is usually manic . Two of us go twice a year , usually , and we now steer clear on weekends .
Cheers , we are looking to go down on a tuesday or wednesday 1st or 2nd september so will be midweek , but trying to see if it will be open on these dates .
Just ordered Kriega us combo 40 from sportsbikeshop and got a cracking deal also ordered a puncture repair kit and a disc alarm , planning and bike preparation well underway ( Keen or just plain excited )
i'd seriously give Brendan a call at sliders, he's an ex brummy so easy to deal with and he know the place like the back of his hand. will go round with you and give you the pointers you need. its mental there, bikes are at a serious disadvantage! corner speed and top end so weekday evenings good place to start.
You will need to wait if you want to know if the track will be open then. I live out here and instruct on the Ring and even we don't know dates yet for opening beyond may. There is a new owner/operator for the track this year as the sale of the Ring finally took place. Also after May the existing price structure and access to the track could be totally different as there are things in the pipework. Again we have no idea whats happening. The track is not allways open as advertised but please keep an eye on this link to dates and times Opening times Nordschleife - Nürburgring Bren is a good guy, formerly the Baron of Performance Bikes fame. He has been a good mate for many years, infact if you do stay there, there is a chance we could meat as my wife often rustles up good food for hiself and his guests. If he is full we have two guestrooms a double and a triple, infact nearly everywhere out here is bike friendly re hotels. If you need anymore help just ask.
Bren is in Spain all winter but will still respond to emails, agree he is a good guy. As for weeknight openings being more suited to novices, yes BUT this year there is strong talk out here that weekday opening may be cheaper than at weekends. If this happens then beware as weekday slots will be as busy as weekends currently are as the flipside is that they are possibly ramping prices up bigtime at weekends to try and reduce vehicle numbers on track. All speculative rumours but very likely to happen now it is privatly owned.
that sounds about right.i've avoided the weekends, driving anyway, the last few times. wacky races i like it later in the evenings, locals are out and about, its cooler, the foods great.
Really appreciate your help and advice will certainly keep you in mind and Bren will defo stop at either and could meet up i shall wait for the dates to come out nearer the time .
Be ready, "The Ring" is pretty hairy on a bike, it is a long long lap and there were race prepared Porsche's steaming past in corners when I was there and I don't think that is unusual. And they made me take my GoPro off as it was adhesive mount so if you want to film, get a fixed mount (or hide it :Arghh.
