2001 ST2 Charging problems, 2 phase or 3 phase or what phase?!

  1. Hi all,

I have an ongoing (see bloody annoying) issue with my 2001 X reg (registered Jan '01) ST2's charging system and I'm not 100% which version it has. I believe on this reg it should be a 3 phase? but there are only 2 wires coming out of the crank case. It also has a gold frame which I believe for this reg should be silver/grey? So do I have the dreaded '98 system on my '01 registered bike?

During the course of owning the bike I've had a series of flat batteries and have so far replaced the battery itself as well as the regulator/rectifier. The new rectifier fitted was the Electrex RR50 with the block connectors and it went straight in. Since then I've had more flat batteries and flickering battery lights, and the last AA man noticed that as the engine warmed up the volts from the stator dropped until the bike cut out at sub 12volts. Now, I've looked in to replacing the stator but would the Electrex G22 Stator work? I'm a little concerned as the image shown has 2 bullet connectors not the connector block my current one has, and it's rated at max 350w when the 2 phase was 450w and 3 phase 500+! is this even the right stator and/or would it be up to the job?

Otherwise is it possible to convert it to 3 phase if I have the 2?

Seriously thinking of flogging the &@$%£# thing atm but buyitnow bike places are only offering £500 for it

Any help/advice would be really appreciated

    Jon

  2. A 2 wire stator is definitely single phase so it looks like you probably have the '98 450W alternator and by the sound of it it's on it's way out. I think the G22 rotor will fit but as you know it's only 350W.
    The other option might be to have your rotor re-wound. These places all claim to offer a rewind service;

MOTORCYCLE GENERATOR/STATOR REWIND SERVICE for sale at Elliotts Motorcycles Cricklade, nr Swindon, Wiltshire

I've never used any so can't vouch for them.

To convert to 3-phase you'd need to change the crank and outer casing as well as the stator and rotor, in fact probably most of the bottom end since there were major changes to them with the introduction of the 3-phase alternator.

  3. I can vouch for west country. They did my 916. Been perfect since.

  4. Thanks for the replies, so, single phase it is then, and the one I probably got confused with the wires numbering 2, who knows!! Probably going to go down the route of getting it re-wound, that way it should be done properly rather than fitting another one that will go duff in time or just not be up to the job. Thing has been driving me crazy as it's just a large, silver Ducati branded garage ornament at the moment

    Thanks again

  5. I've got an ST2 (single-phase) alternator, in fact the complete LH crankcase cover assembly with stator & water pump also got the flywheel etc. - was working OK when the engine was stripped.

Let me know if there's anything you're interested in.

  6. We have just used West Country windings and while we are still to refit it the service we received was brilliant.

  7. Ah, that answers my question as I could have swore they were in Plymouth when they did the one on my 916 10yrs or so ago. Fast turnaround too.

  8. I think I'm just going to get my one rewound, save mucking about and hopefully it wont go duff again. Only real concern is tackling the case bolts as I've sheered one of the one's holding the V front fairing bit on and nearly another whilst doing the belt covers, needed heating etc to get it out; joys of steel in ali plus corrosion :/

  9. st 1 phase stator spacer upgrade

    hi
before you rebuild have a look at the spacer to the rear of the magnetic stator try to see if the oil way up grade has been done as this will flow oil over the stator as you ride as you look at the photo this is the way it fits on the crank shaft so the face you see is to the rear of the magnetic stator small bit of wire will soon let you know if it is done as you turn the engine over plugs out
    mike

this upgrade works as the oil way hole in the crank shaft is blocked by the factory fitted spacer so a oil way is machined in to it and across the face it as well it is not a key way machined it is a oil way machined radius if you need to do your own it can bee done as i have done this one

here is my magnetic stator lock tool on my st2 jan 2014 sprag clutch laser cut in 8mmx630mm long mild steel in uk

hi just rechecked if as you say your st2 is 2001 it is a 3 wire 3 phase the photos i posted are 1 phase 2 wire type here are some photos for you ducati 3 phase this is the flywheel so you can see thet not the same

yes i know the 3 phase type are not st range they are all the same after 2000 one is 748r and a multy with my lock tools fitted
