Hello All, Newbie, but very long time two valve owner, and in a past life racer. Firstly I'd like to say your Captcha robot thingy is crook. It asked me to identify motorcycles, but clearly there was a HD boat anchor photo in there too. I dislike mis-attributing items for what they are clearly not. Anyway.... The black art of suspension. My 2002 900 sport has the non adjustable 43mm Showas, actually quite a decent bit of kit for what they are. Had them on track at (admittedly very smooth) Bedford and no drama from them. BUt would like a slightly more complaint ride on Britain's B road goat tracks they laughing refer to as public roads. Does anyone know / have experience of inserting modern Showa BPF cartridges within the stock 43mm legs? Say from a 899 Panigale or a GSXR750? Is this possible, is there a thread within my stock leg they can screw down within, or am I dreaming? Cheers from a bloke who once committed the cardinal sin of selling a Guzzi 1000s.
Very interested to hear the outcome of this....bike I've just bought (2002 900SS ie - I've just learned!) has got adjustable forks but I would like to get 'em set up for my weight 210 with kit, set up for solo. As an ex-racer, do you have any pointers? Cheers S23
Hi Speedy. Sag is always the starting point of any suspension. Your geared up weight s/be within range of the standard springs. This article is as good as any out there. Nice and clear cut: https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/motorcycle-suspension-tech-tips-how-to-set-rider-sag-mc-garage/ The manual says with your SS fully adjustables 11 clicks off max compression(bottom of fork leg) and 7 clicks off max rebound (top adjuster). Preload range 10-25 mm. Factory 18mm. The rest is a rabbit hole. This thread worth a butchers at though: https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/fork-upgrade.18533/
Just seen - 1000S that was like a square-barrel LeMans/V7 retro. Nice bike....carbed? What were they - 36mm?
Well read through that little lot....some food for thought. Thanx for the info on sag, etc. Will have a bit of a play with it.
Also watching this thead with a keen eye for my ie build! Anyone any good advice to the question asked? Cheers Grant
1000s. Yeah the wire wheels, chrome dash, white faced Veglia's, small dellorto carb'ed (36's) in orange and black. Only about 62 RWHP but she was a very balanced thing, and great comfortable mile muncher for a fairingless bike especially one with straight clip-ons. But still willing to be ridden agressively. Once the big ugly engine protection bars and standard mirrors were jettisoned (and for me the linked brake gimmick too. Don't like touching the rear brake on big twins) , she was a handsome beast. Bugger all of them produced and they just keep appreciating.
