Im having an interesting problem with my bike, When starter button is held down the solenoid just sits there and clicks. I installed a new starter that works correctly when jumped, new solenoid that when jumped works just fine. any ideas? the bike runs just fine once the starting system has been bypassed.
If the solenoid works when jumped, but doesn't when operated normally, then I'd suggest that the "new" solenoid is faulty.....
That would make sense, but both the old and the new click on and off repeatedly in the same exact way. the way it acts it almost sounds like what ever initiates the solenoid is not giving it a constant on.
I know that some 2002 bikes ( and later of course ) have the starter solenoid switched by the ecu and not directly by the switch. That could point to an issue in the ecu if this wore the case. If not and it is the old school version then a possibly a poor contact in the starter button on the handlebar.
is the starter churning speed ok? you could try several tests:- as above, to check handlebar starter switch, take a "hotwire" lead and connect between positive on battery and spade terminal on starter solenoid to rule this out as being faulty. to check battery, piggy-back a car battery to motorbike battery and see if solenoid works via handlebar switch or not. If these two show no cure then you tend to move toward faulty solenoid. The std item has a slim/quarter height nut securing both connector threaded studs and these are to set height of stud and to prevent them from turning. Even on a new solenoid either of the above can be affected upon fitting and both can result in solenoid not working - the height can be restored if it's happened but the stud turning too far from original position can damage operation permanently.
