local Ducati dealer has told me these (cambelts) should be sorted every 2 yrs?? at vast expense; am considering selling this bike with 4142 on the clock, serviced three times I think- any comment on this??
Agreed - I think the belts price has crept up a little now, might be as much as £70 a pair, but I could change a set start to finish in under an hour with no special tools. I also think the two year rule is a bit strict, I'd check the belt tension yearly (it's belts to tight that causes failure) but would have no issue running them for 3 or 4 years on a low annual mileage bike.
I run my 2 valve bikes for 3-4 years between belt changes. Regular use or turn them over every couple of months.
The belts are made by Gates, you can get them from any motor factor, they just don't say ducati on them
I also typed out instructions for dummies........unfortunately one dummy got it wrong.......but I will post them again if necessary. AL
They are indeed made by Gates but trying to find some in a motor factors that will fit your Ducati will be a tad difficult.
I know they won't stock them but a good factor should be able to get them same day/next day if you have the part number. I've taken belts in off portable welders and they've got then no problem Remember to check the pullys for any damage, when I changed my belts there was a stone imbeded in one of the belts in the teeth, luckly there was no damage
Have you actually/physically sourced belts for a Ducati from a motor factors? You have square toothed belts for the earlier 600/750. Round tooth on the later 2 valvers. Then when you come to the Kevlar reinforced belts for the TestaStretta engine. How about posting a Gates part number for some if you think its possible, perhaps you should ask my missus, as she knows more than Google.
And contrary to what a certain person who shall remain nameless but is at present enjoying a well earned holiday at one of Her Majesty's residences; the two belts are not interchangeable.......I discussed it with both Gates and one of the better Ducati dealers.......the round tooth belt can slip in the square tooth pulley and the square tooth belt will not sit in the round tooth pulley properly.......... AL
When I order my belts I spoke to a ducati parts supplier who advised me that the the original ducati belts are made by gates and ducati charge more money to have there logo on the belts and the part number/logo in red, remember gates don't just make belts for engine we use all gates belts at work and if I have a look the square tooth belt that is on my bike(I can't say any one elses is the same) is probably in the engineering stores. Belts on my bike, early 750ss are gates powergrip 5141 68x3/4" square teeth.
I have to agree with the others here about changing the belts yourself, it really an easy job to do yourself on the 2V motors.
Here's a reply from Craig at MotoRapido dated 28.06.13. The official RRP for the square tooth 600/750 belts is £35.47 per pair, the later (1998-2000) round tooth version is £48.46 per pair. But, if he has a 2001/2002 750ssie, the pair run at £78.72 per pair. I think the 900 versions run roughly inline with this price pattern, but with different part numbered belts. AL
That's the fitting guide and tensioning method I used when I did mine, it's child's play. It takes as long to get the fairing off as it does to do the belts. If in doubt a dealer shouldn't charge much. If in doubt, turn the engine over several times by hand after a belt change before firing it up. The other top is removing the spark plugs makes the job far easier
Agreed - my 900 sees low mileage and I will stretch the time interval to three years without concern. Regarding fitting a set of Allen keys is all you need.
