2006 Multistrada Refresh

  1. Bought my Multi new in 2006. I generally ride it daily in any weather aside from snow on the road. Love long distances. Have added some bolt on mods like pannier mounts, crash bars, skid plate and improved lighting (don't ever want to hit a deer). I am very passionate about riding but not a racer. The last mod was very well intentioned but possibly ill advised.

Since I ride in lots of rain and some salt spray, my bike suffers from [water + Ducati electronics = problems]. I am on my second dash due to corrosion on the printed circuit board. Decided to go for modern electronics. I successfully installed a Motogadget M-unit Blue and replaced the handlebar switch gear with the push button controls that work with that set up. I also had partial success installing the Motogadget Motoscope Pro to get a much more weather proof dash. A few inaccuracies in the wiring Multistrada wiring diagram lead to ineffective connections to the wiring harness for the inputs for the various functions of the Motoscope Pro.

I sent the ECU off to get the immobilizer disabled so that I could use the keyless ignition function of M. Unit. Not initially, but some where along the way with my efforts to connect the Motoscope pro inputs I started seeing the CAN line error code. Jpdiag software indicates U1601 which indicates the immobilizer circuit.

I have not found that the U1601 error is expected when the immobilizer is disabled so I decided to look at the entire wiring harness for any problems. I found several places where the soldered junctions between wires, covered with plain old plastic electrical tape were a bit exposed since the tape adhesive had turned to goop. Also a couple places where the wire insulation had broken so am fixing those too. I am about ready to re-connect the wiring and see what presents.

I stumbled on this site while trying to learn about disassembly of the pins in the ECU connector because I would like to improve the protection on some of the wires with shrink wrap but could not figure out how to free up the wire from the ECU connector. A search lead to an article by Chris about repairing an ECU damaged in a crash.

I discovered this site has good info and enthusiasm for the bikes so I signed up. The only photo I have to post is one that shows it's current state, my apologies. More to come... Disassembled duc.png

  2. Wow, you have a bit of a job on there! I admire your skills, looking at your photo fills me with dread, you obviously have electronics skills:upyeah:

  3. I is scary looking but I needed to look at all the wires, connections and junctions. Am in the re-assembly to test it out phase now and if all is well, get new sheathing back on the loom. Then it won't be such a snarl.

  4. Welcome to the forum

  5. Harness is back on. Starts, runs, still with the u1601 error. 0pen circuit, ostensibly related to the immobilizer but the antenna circuit has almost zero resistance so not broken or corroded and lines to/from look good. I've read it can relate to other things like bad grounds. Will start checking voltage drops along various lines and see what I can find.

Should this move to a technical forum?

  6. welcome bradford, good luck..yes I'd just post a new thread for this buddy
