Hey everyone, Looking for some views/advice from owners or riders having experience of both 2008 1098R vs 2016 1199R. I previously owned a Ducati 1098S but due to divorce, unfortunately I had to part with her. Loved the bike but I am now in a position to get back on the hos, so to speak. Looking at moving onwards and upwards but am torn between getting another 1098 albeit and R or getting a newer Pani in the 2016 1199R. Been searching the threads but cannot find any direct comparisons of these. Appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks, A
Welcome and HNY. No experience of 1199R but can confirm 1098R is a special and somewhat mental machine.
Robanaro would be able to or exige but both don’t come here any more. @Mary Hinge can describe 1098r vs later v4 (ie later tech) Pretty sure most will say the same: to ride fast the pani knocks spots of the 1098 but the 1098 is simply raw and mental on a different level
ive got a panigale r 15 plate and had a 1198 base before, i actually prefered the 1198 as the sound was just amazing with the full termi system, the riding possition was better i found too, dont get me wrong the pani is great but as a road bike its to much unless your doing 150mph everywhere, the 1198 was easier to ride.
I currently have both, but am thinning the stable in the next 3m. The pani R will be leaving. The older bike feels a lot harsher/less sanitised and has more mid range. The pani R doesnt really start to come on the boil until 8.5/9k rpm, after which it takes off like a scalded cat. It much prefer a lumpy angry motor, so I'm staying with the 1098R.
If the difference between my 1098R and my Panigale V4S is anything to go by, the Panigale R will have no comparison to the 1098R. 8 years between the technology is a huge gap. The classic trellis frame of the 1098 is, IMO, less stiff than the air box/headstock stressed member of the 1199 which requires a different riding style. My V4 just blew me away and my 1098R will be finding a new owner come spring, the difference is that big. Andy
Thanks for the reply. I absolutely loved my 1098S. From the first time I took it out I was amazed at how easy/effortless it was to ride. It was my first big big bike, having previously had a couple of 600s. Spent a bit on upgrades etc and it was rapid... Interesting to hear you preferred your 1198 over the Panigale R and that you believe sound, riding position is better. I've heard Pani' is easier to ride and more comfortable, however, I guess its horses for courses in a lot of respects. The majority of my riding will be on the road, although I will be living near Cadwell Park and hope to experience track days. Guess i am leaning towards low end/mid range power/acceleration over top end speeds.
Thanks for your comments so far everyone. Some useful information there. Just to throw another option into the mix 2011 1198SP. I have been perusing web pages for a while now (as you do) and there are 3 bikes I've been looking at. In due course will have the funds and was not wanting to spend more than c.20k. As below: 1198SP 15k 1098R 22k 1199R 20k So between the 3, money is not really a problem, although could save £££s with 1198SP of course. As mentioned previously I owned a 1098S so presuming sizing / set up pretty similar with 1098R and 1198SP?. Never ridden a Pani though... (perhaps a test ride might be a good idea at some point, if I can get on one, before committing). They all look stunning and I like the look of the Pani tbh. Just thinking about what's going to be my best fit for mainly fair weather blasting on roads around NE Lincs. The comments regarding Pani' lack of low end/mid range torque is the only thing that's putting me off - is it really that bad?. Also if you can look past this, is it not preferable getting a Pani for all the modern tech on it? As for the 1198SP and 1098R is the R really worth the extra money?? Thanks.
Ahh, the Bike Specialists Renowned for offering bikes priced at a premium. I haven’t seen a 1098R actually sell for £22k for a very long time. One advertised on here, https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/ducati-1098r-completely-rebuilt.81420/, more competitively priced under £20k. IMO, the 1198SP is the better buy if a tad over priced. the 1098r is very special id go for one if i could. think theres 7 on ebay at the mo also @ditchvisitor has a minter for sale with in your budget
I actually like the colours of the 1299S Anniversario, and although I'm not keen on the Tricolore, I hear the 1299R' spec is close to Superleggera (do like the Akra Pipes). 28k now though.... again are they worth the extra £££s and does the low/mid range torque issues resolve on the bigger 1299'?
If you are looking for a top quality 1098r, the one for sale on here (is it @ditchvisitor ?? Can’t remember, @Mary Hinge old bike) would be where my cash would go at the price of what some others are asking. Check out bike ads.
You can buy almost new ones for sub 23k. I think John W didn’t pay much more for a zero mile version. it’s not a real R tho
If bork means mechanical issues, they do love a gearbox or three apparently. No idea what the pani R is like for longevity
