Hi all, can you advise what's the reliability like on the first models as I'm reading quite a lot on here that's starting to scare me into getting a bike out of warranty. I originally wanted the S model however it seems that the DES is a major issue and expensive to repair. I was hoping to pay around the 10k mark, anymore would mean a lot more overtime and an argument with the missus if she finds out! What sort of mileage has everybody done and is there really a big difference between the two models, I only ride on my own so the settings wouldn't need to be changed regularly. Thanks in advance.
Can't speak for the earlier model but I would say risk the row with the missus and go for the 2013-on Skyhook model. Great bike. But if you do go for the earlier one make sure all the warranty upgrades have been done by a reputable dealer. Good luck.
Had mine 20 months, 8,000m never missed a beat. Love it to bits. Word of caution, it doesn't end with buying the bike, there's bling aplenty to adorn your bike with and a set of QD's make it sound like god gargling thunder!
Eight thousand miles in 20 months? You're not really taxing it though are you. I have done 9,000 on mine in eight months and had done 8,000 in six months until Noah turned up! Wish I had your QDs though!
Any issues with a 2010/11 should have been sorted out. If you can only afford 10k then go for it. The choice is yours which you buy, but personally I would look for one that has the best compromise of mileage vs age. Low miles is not an indicator of better condition. Again, personally would have no issue with buying an ohlins equipped bike over a skyhook one, infact I would prefer an ohlins one. That's my preference though, and am sure others would feel differently. Btw, I had one of the first 2010 bikes until a month ago, and intended to keep it despite it being out of warranty. I only sold it as I had the opportunity to buy a new unreg'd 2012 (ohlins) bike at a very good price. Finally, none of us can guess what problems you might encounter, but having had a number of ducats over the last 10+ years, I have never had any scary bills, or anything that would make me worry about buying another one (in or out of warranty) Hope that helps.
Agree that if you buy a 2010/11 it should be fully sorted by now, as mine is. I have a 2010 ABS and covered 16K miles, it's a fantastic bike and I have no reason to change it. I spent 2,000 miles on a brand new 2013 GT and was happy getting back onto mine afterwards so could not justify the £6-7k upgrade. If you get one with 15K+ miles make sure it's had the major service, new chain and sprockets and has been looked after - preferably not used through Winter. You should have a great bike and probably around the £8k mark if you look privately. Probably best be flexible with which model but make sure you get ABS. Make sure it has all the full documentation and history. Good luck.
Did you have some major work on yours though kirky , noticed a few are having major engine trauma of late and I know of a few that have gone bang
I wouldnt touch one out off warranty, unless you have deep pockets or neighbour as Ducati technician. I had mine for 2 years, fantastic bike, it really is, until it goes wrong, I had clutch, clocks, switchgear all go wrong at about 4 months out o warranty, month later I had oil coming out of the head and dripping onto the exhaust headers, lost clutch at same time, when I took it into get looked at they said as they couldnt see the problem it wasnt there, eh! So I sold it before warranty ran out. I then sold my akra pipe to a member on here who when fitting it discovered coolant between the heads, took it into garage and has had 2 new heads fitted to his, this would have cost him 3k if it had not have been covered under warranty. More and more bikes are getting to be a more affordable price but they are gonna catch out a few riders as problems arise more and more. Buy with warranty would be my advice, I woud have another one, if I could afford the depreciation hit I would have new and change every 18 months, but out off warranty no chance. Good luck with what ever you decide to do, they are an awesome bike.
Thanks all, but the responses are all different and all have their own opinions. I'll have to have a bit of think on which bike to buy, if the price and mileage is right then I'll probably get a second hand one but I will be very cautious due to the issues I've had with my RSV4 factory.
Yes Dave. There was an issue with the coolant that caused cylinder heads to leak on a % of the 2010/11's. When mine started showing lots of condensation at start-up it turned out to be the front cylinder. Ducati UK replaced both heads FOC in it's 3rd year. Cei1973, The simple peace of mind solution is to take out Warrantydirect cover at about £360ish. If the heads/radiator/clocks fail or any other worst case problems, then you'll be covered. Seems worth it for the peace of mind aspect and if you buy privately you'll save perhaps £1000-1500. There have been a couple of engine failures but pretty rare overall and plenty of owners have had no serious issues at all.
Will be honest and say reckon I will keep the 1000 for this year and then get either another 1200 or a pani , I'm thinking more of the pcp route and change bikes every three years so as to always stay in warranty , only £3k down and £135 a month on a 1200 abs think I'd go this route cheap ownership for sure
