1199 2012 Pani 1199 What To Watch For?

  1. Gonna take the plunge and pick up an 1199 Panigale lads this week I'm hoping, 2012s are just falling into my budget and I was looking at a one with around 20k but in excellent standard nick. Anyone point me in the right direction about what to look out for would be greatly appreciated! Its in Rosso and looks like a lovely bike with a good history. Or am I just mad lol?

  2. Others will have more I'm sure but if it's an early one just ensure its had all recalls done, things like the added heat shields etc were all warranty jobs as I understand it.

Some of the much lesser known issues like small water leaks would have presented by now but the bike should have had a proper valve clearance check so if possible see if there is an itemised receipt showing all that work completed.

The only other thing personally I would check is the Ohlins fork clamps around the front axle , it's likely that it's had 5 or more wheel changes so make sure the Ohlins forks haven't had the clamps over tightened and cracked

  4. Seriously though I've got a 2012 standard and have had no issues apart from normal wear and tear (Fork Seals)... I've had all the recall work done although will need to check about the heat shields as mine have not been changed and I met a few guys at Silverstone who's bikes had and some not had them changed??? My dash tends to steam up a bit now and again too... I believe some people had these swapped out under warranty...(the previous owner didn't ride mine enough to notice it obviously)... other than that go find some nice fast sweeping corners and it'll all make sense :upyeah:

  5. It should have had recalls and maintenance done. The 2014 fuel maps are way better than the original ones that were on the 2012 Pani.

  6. I think in total there were 7 recalls. Have a look on the DVLA website.
Don't over fill the oil. Keep it on minimum when cold otherwise "spirited" use (track days) can blow oil back through the air box.
Check the bolts at each corner of the head are torqued down. Over time they have been known to loosen slightly and the first you notice is a very slight film of oil on the engine. That said, I use mine on track days only & this is a once a season job and they were fine.

  7. Check for smoking on start up. So of the early ones were (mine was) smokers. Great bikes and cracking vfm now.

  8. Thanks a mill lads, great replies there. This has actually been owned by a main dealer from Germany since new and used for tours so with 20k its a little higher than average but a huge history and I've been assured all work completed as per schedule. I'm very excited....should be here this time next week.....

  9. My 2012 has now done 7500 miles its been bob on, it did smoke on start up but hasn't do so for quite some time now.

  10. Slightly off topic but main thing I have to watch out for is speeding tickets !

  11. Well she arrived safely and looks gorgeous. So far I've changed the standard rear light to the integrated unit, its fab. Bought a little number plate bracket that sits where the pillion pegs used be, its very neat. Changed the tires to a new set of Bridgestone S20 Evos bit more suited to road riding here. The comfort seat was a big disappointment, it bloody kills my arse after half an hour! I find the Ohlins suspension just too harsh for our roads, even in wet mode yesterday with all settings to almost fully soft it still wasnt great. must move the spring rate from flat to progressive to see does that help. Other than that she's a beauty....

  12. They are quite harshly sprung, a good set up will help, a softer spring being favourable
