Just thought I'd cheer you boys up with the knowledge that BMW has recalled 31 of their new GSs due to a high oil pressure problem on the transmission side of the engine which could cause oil to leak past the outer oil seal onto the rear tyre. They are installing an oil pressure limiter in that area to give the seal a chance. I would have thought they would have spotted that before now having tested them over x thousands of miles. Still think they should be great bikes though once the beta test first customers have fed back any faults and they get fixed. Let's see if BMW are any quicker at this than Ducati. The signs look like they will be.
Had a couple of BMWs before my MTS and credit where it's due - BMW are much better at dealing with recalls and warranty issues. With Ducati it seems like the dealers have to do lots of chasing and cajoling to get approval to fix stuff (and luckily my dealer is very good). BMW just seem to sort stuff out - obviously much more interested in repeat business...
Interesting that. As you say BMW are saying that many many kilometers have passed under it's wheels. Lets hope they were outside kloms and not on a rolling road? Have booked a test ride in March to see whats what re the kettle 1200 GS. My MST now has new engine cases (pants paint), new rad (Hawk fog light issue) new coolant (twice), rear brake mod and am now waiting to see what's next? Haven't seen it for 4 weeks due to all the work it's had and now it's snowed again
Expect leaks, shaft drive issues and new electrical problems. Lots has changed on the bike apart from just 'water cooling'. I know a few owners of late 1200gs's and they also had issues with paint and finish....sorted under warranty but no better than Ducati and test miles do not 'test' parts for quality that are sourced in bulk once manufacture starts in earnest. Its often quality of parts that are root cause of problems.
I was thinking about moving this to other bikes, but I think i'll leave it here as its clearly relevant for Multi owners
I had trouble with all three of my BMWs. Lots of corrosion and oil leaks and a battery failure on a one-year-old the day before I was off to Ireland. I had to join the que for service and they insisted on 12 hours of checks before they would replace it. That bike cost £11,000 in 2006. I missed the ferry. Mates have had a string of ABS problems, final drives, broken centre stands and even magnesium head covers with the finish flaking off on the INSIDE! BMW keep people quiet(ish) with free parts but the labour charges still make eyes water. I know many that are on their last BMW. Early days (18 months actually) but my experience of Ducati has been of better build quality and service that I got from BMW.
