2013 Multi Granturismo ?? Should I ??

  1. I've been lurking about on this forum for a while - posted once or twice , and have got some great information - Thankyou all !
I have a 2011 Red Mutley set up for touring with panniers , topbox , GPS , crash bars and Mivv pipe with decat and I just love it !!
( Except for the " average" rear brake )
I'm was thinking of putting bigger lids on panniers , and then I thought maybe I should just trade in for the new Granturismo .
Has anyone got one yet ? If so what do you think of it ? Should I pull the trigger and trade up ?

  2. DucDave. I've had one for a few weeks now.
It's just had its first service and I've come down to Cornwall on it for a week fully loaded. I had a 2011 MTS Touring and part ex'd it. I love the bike. It is smoother at low revs (town work) than previous. The screen is an improvement as is the overall comfort. The rear brake is definitely better but stil not world beating and for those who haven't had the increased capacity panniers before, they do stick out a bit. Although I don't ride the bike to its limit the new semi active suspension just felt a bit wiered. I kept expecting 'normal' things to happen in bumpy corners for example and then you realise that the bike has sorted any issues out which for me made the bike feel a bit vague at first. Now, having got used to it I have complete confidence in it which has resulted in slightly increased corner speeds. It also doesn't dip at the front as much under braking. Biggest improvement for me is smoother low engine speeds. And a bit better mid range grunt. The head light is fantastic now.
If like me you are already used to riding a Multi then the differences are subtle rather than dramatic but definitely better.
Hope this helps to make your mind up.

  3. Thanks Sprocket .
I'm in QLD Australia and do some big distance .
Problem here is that no ( or very few ) dealers have a demo bike .
My dealer has just got a standard multi and is 3 and half hours ride away - I guess that's a good excuse for a good ride.
Thanks for your feedback - Cheers mate

  4. I have an early 2010 1200ABS which I love. It has my favourite tyres (PR3's) Mivv exhaust for great sound, cruise control, tweaked suspension, satnav and so is basically just as I want it. Because of a little engine problem (being fixed under extended warranty) I had the use of a brand new Gran Turismo and after over 1600 miles through Spain and Portugal here are my thoughts:

    • Engine is smother low down but still not perfect. Will pull easily from 2500rpm but still best over 4k.
    • More economical say 49mpg VS 45mpg.
    • Noticeably heavier and a little higher at the seat (less suspension sag?)
    • Screen bigger but not much of a difference for me.
    • Lights much brighter and those extra spots of course!
    • Individual looks
    • Skyhook VS "Active" Ohlins - I swapped to a friends machine that had the ECU upgrade and the only noticeable difference was a fraction more control under braking with the Skyhook.
    • Panniers far too wide. I didn't use them on my trip.
    • Brakes were VERY good and with the lack of dive with the Skyhook.
    • Almost £17k and then you need to change exhaust add your favourite bits and pieces.
    • Did not "feel" as quick as my bike - extra weight and lack of exhaust drama?
Conclusion for me was that the differences are so marginal that I could not possibly justify the £9K I'd have to pay for the change. That could buy me a very different toy (KTM 690/Hypermotard?).
A nice machine though and rather good looking.

  5. I am the same as you nearly got the granturismo. It's great but not. At 17 grand ill wait a couple of years and see then can spend my money any time I want to hehe

  6. Thanks Kirky and Stu
That big price difference is a real stumbling block for me too .
I'm trying to sort out fueling at moment , so maybe after I leave mutly at the dealer for a week it may be transformed ? ( Maybe not )

Ill still take the touring demo for ride this Saturday and report back ( but it's not a GT )
And I agree with you and Stu - I could spend that extra something else.
    Cheers Dave

  7. Could you tell me the problem you had with the engine please....

  8. I looked at the GT recently considering trading in my 2011 st, apart from the price which was a stumbling block I considered the big panniers (which I thought looked cumbersome), the top box I already have (in red), the engine bars (not sure if I like them and there are aftermarket variants available), Bigger screen (looks fairly good but don't mind trying the standard first), Tyres, (would probably end up with PR3s anyway), Bar risers (don't need them on my ST), fancy seat (the seat on my ST is more than adequate for my needs), The Colour, (just not my cup of tea). Given all that I ordered the 2013 in red with the spots as an option, I like the look of them...

  9. Ditto. Colour is the absolute turnoff. Had to kit out a red ST.

All said, the GT is good value if you want bigger lids and box.

  10. Sounds like we are all on the same page!
I just got back from test riding the S Touring ( Not the GT ) .
After I read the previous posts I didn't really have a very high expectation of the 2013 bike .
But for me - The engine is so much better across the whole rev range , and I could actually stop the new bike with just the rear brake ! Sweet !
Maybe my old Mutley is a bit of a dog , but I thought the new bike was superior in ALL areas !
I came away pretty impressed . But there is still that big question for me - Is it really worth the extra $$ ?
I should also factor in the fact that I'm nearly due for the 24K service !
I'm not going to make any rash decisions , and I will wait 3 weeks until my dealer gets a GT for me to have a look at , but my hand is getting twitchy to write the cheque !
Thanks for all the feedback guys
    Dave
