Hi folks, During an attempted but unsuccessful due to a shit ton of locks and chains theft, the rats broke the steering lock. This is the only damage on the bike. Now my question to the knowledgeable among us, is this an easy repair interms of buying a part and replacing or does the dealer need to do it because keys need coding etc? I can live without the steering lock, just thinking long term when it comes to selling. Alternatively, is this an insurance claim to fix? Appreciate the help!!
I have seen a 1200 after an attempted theft where the lock pin was jammed under the D shaped locking bar, the lock, bolts are anti-tamper and have to be drilled out then the unit replaced which IIRC means taking the tank off the bike. Could well be expensive!
Fortunately in my case, the pin broke clean off so I have free movement of the handlebar but this is starting to sound more like a dealership job to me...
Never used it; once I read the resulting "..mines locked & won't unlock middle of no where" lark. I vowed & still have not used this feature, use a roadlok front-disc device which means it'll take two people too steal the bike if they've not got a grinder.
Sorry to resurrect the thread but how did you get on with this? Same happened to me today in the car park I use for work, according the car park staff; only the attention of strangers and - would you Adam and Eve it - the rozzers showing up!?!? evidently scared em off. Grateful to know what - if anything - you did @Devan Kotze and how much it it cost? Cheers.
Hey @Handtoeknee , I have not progressed with it and just left it. Added a HIPLOK to the arsenal and just carried on. Decided to keep the bike till the wheels fall off so will worry about it then.
Thanks for the update - thinking to do the same, got a Roadlok and will just use that more, and a chain at the car park I guess. Cheers
Never used steering lock on any of my bikes. It does nothing to deter thieves and is a risk it won't work as you say when you need it most. I wouldn't even bother trying to fix it, just make note of it to the next buyer, it's not gonna lose value, just look a bit dodgy lol
Yeah I think I have learned this the hard way, it was an old habit cos I guess I was worried about insurance connotations but once you play out the logic, it’s kind of a no brainer not to fix it now. Never to be used again!
If anything... 'steering lock is broken, thieves tried but couldn't get past my security' - I'd be happy hearing that as a buyer knowing you put effort into keeping it safe and secure!
